Didn't know that F1 had two female drivers compete in races back in the 50's and 70's.

Quote :
Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to compete in a world championship Formula One [theguardian.com] grand prix, has died at the age of 89. The Italian started three grand prix races in a privately entered Maserati 250F, finishing a best place of 10th at Spa-Francorchamps in 1958.

The Naples-born driver had earlier tried to qualify for that year's Monaco Grand Prix, failing in her efforts along with another debutant, the future F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Both were too slow to qualify but there was no cut-off in Belgium, allowing De Filippis to qualify in last place. Nine of the 19 cars then failed to finish, and she crossed the line 10th.

*snip*

The late Lella Lombardi is the only other woman to start a Formula 1 race, making the grid in 12 grands prix between 1974 and 1976. Britain's Divina Galica, the South African Desire Wilson and the Italian Giovanna Amati have unsuccessfully tried to qualify for the races.

Sergio Marchionne wouldn't know stability if it bit him on his butt.

Apple has approached McLaren Technology Group, the British supercar engineer and Formula One team owner, about a potential acquisition, in the clearest sign yet that the iPhone maker is seeking to transform the automotive industry.

The California technology group, which has been working on a self-driving electric vehicle for more than two years, is considering a full takeover of McLaren or a strategic investment, according to three people briefed on the negotiations who said talks started several months ago.

A tie-up with McLaren [ft.com], whose expertise ranges from automotive engineering and on-board computer systems to novel chassis materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium, could accelerate Apple's secretive automotive project.

Apple's interest in the Woking-based company centres on its technology, engineering prowess and patent portfolio, said people briefed on the talks. However, those people cautioned that it was unclear if a deal would go ahead following a recent shift in Apple's car strategy.

Divorce, fire & 22-hour days... the reality of life in Formula 1

The life of those in the Formula 1 circus can certainly appear glamorous. And, for the most part, it is - homes in Monaco, lavish parties and private jets a part of everyday life.

But for F1's mechanics - the lesser-known faces of the paddock - life is very different. They are more likely to live in Mansfield than Monaco, while very long hours and airport queues are part and parcel of the job.

It's a career fraught with danger. They've received electric shocks, taken whacks to delicate parts of their bodies and almost been run over, all in the line of duty.

Plus, it makes being in any kind of long-term relationship very tough.
Yet it can be incredibly rewarding.

And while I'm here...

WTF are they "penalizing" Rossberg 10 seconds when they know it won't change his podium position?! Especially when Rossberg keeps doing that same illegal maneuver race after race, they should penalize him in a way that actually hurts him in the standings, or tack it onto his next start.

In their defense, 10 seconds is enough to change positions if they person they passed illegally is competitive on pace, he was less than 10 seconds ahead when the penalty was decided. Will Buxton thought it wasn't even deserved at all, but I don't agree with that, if you can't make the turn without hip checking the person on the outside line, then you've gained an unfair advantage for your maneuver.

I think the first lap incident was more complicated, really. You want people to be agressive off the line, and Vettel did have a better start, but he also didn't really establish his own racing line with respect to what everyone else was doing going into the corner. He's yelled at Verstappen for doing very similar things previously this year. I think with the new driver rules that makes starts more variable, this sort of thing is bound to happen more often in general.

Just saw this...

Ferrari have revealed that Kimi Raikkonen lost a significant amount of performance following his collision with Mercedes' Nico Rosberg in the closing stages of Sunday's race in Malaysia.

*snip*

"It was impossible to give him more power," Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene explained when asked if there was any way Raikkonen could have prevented Rosberg from clinching third.

"Due to the impact with Nico, Kimi lost part of the floor and part of the front wing. From the calculations we have with the engineers, he lost more or less 10 points [of downforce] - so it was quite impossible for him to catch up in this situation.

"Even in such a difficult situation he was doing very good lap times - even with a rather severely damaged car. We tried from the pit wall to do our best, and also with regards to the strategy. We were aggressive - but so were others.

Slightly NSFW, shows men in tight swimming trunks.

A policy advisor to Cabinet Minister Christopher Pyne has been arrested, as part of a group of Australian men who stripped down to their swimmers emblazoned with the Malaysian flag at Sunday's Formula One race in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysian media quotes local police who say the Australians will be remanded for four days and are being investigated for indecent behaviour in a public place and disrespecting the national flag.

Chief executive of the Sepang International Circuit Datuk Razlan Razali told New Straits Times the Australian men deserve to be "locked up, investigated and taken action against".

"This shows a huge lack of respect to us as Malaysians; this is stupid behaviour from foreigners who have no sense of cultural sensitivity and respect.
"It embarrasses their own country as well, it gives Australians a bad name."

Comfort I haven't been getting much sleep as my knee is acting up anyways. I thought the end of the race was a total snoozefest, anyway.
