Good times. I haven't played the guitar in about 15 years. I wonder if I'll remember how when this thing shows up at my door.

Kraft Music has package deals for these for $299 with stand, case, etc. Might spring for that. Also no tax for non-NY.

How is this as a beginner's guitar?? I've bought my daughter a few kid ones and they're junk but she really wants to properly learn

For the money this guitar is amazing. I own several more expensive guitars but have this one at my parents and can't believe how well it's made give the price. It's a fantastic guitar for a beginner.

in what situations would it be useful to have an acoustic electric over an acoustic? I don't personally see myself plugging in without equipment and stuff and am considering the fg700s, the cheaper acoustic variant of this guitar.

It really depends on what you'd like to do with it. I personally have a couple electrics, and an acoustic (no combos) and I can say having the versatility of an electric is great in terms of using various effects through pedals, and to tweak EQ settings through an amp. Plus you will have the option down the road of recording into your PC. You could always use a microphone for this, but that has the risk of picking up background noise, where as direct feed into the PC using an acoustic-electric will not.
