I'm in NJ. Bought a higher end LG washer and LG dryer. My experience was that the big box stores all had similar pricing. The independent stores were a waste of time as most sold very high end stuff that was out of my price range. The one or two independent stores that sold normal merchandise were only willing to give me a deal if I bought three more more appliances.

We have a regional chain here called PC Richards that will sometimes beat the box store prices by a little. Was going to go that way, but ended up buying my washer/dryer at Best Buy. In my case, BB had a 4x points deal just before Christmas. So I had them price match the best price on the washer and dryer from another big box store and took advantage of the points. Was able to turn the points into gift cards. Think I ended up saving about $300 as a result.

Currently looking for a fridge as well. Figure it will be a similar situation, though I believe new refrigerator models come out around May, so there should be sales in the next month or two.

Craigslist.com has used ones. big box stores are good for new but if u don't want to spend a lot of money just don't get all the bells and whistles.... most people never use them!

I don't know if you have a place that sells scratch and dent appliances but you can usually save 40% or more

In comparing stores, don't forget to include extended warranty costs. We are shopping for a french-door refrigerator and found that a 5-year extended warranty is typically $500-800 at most stores. The lowest price I found was Home depot at $250 (for retail price < $5000?) yet I don't know if their service is reputable in comparison.
