Offer Only for New Prime Members-so not true! I was able to cancel my membership and sign up for $73+tax

https://amazon.com/mozartprime

Just saw that you can't get the $73 price if you're gifting Prime: "Promotion does not apply to the gift of Prime."

Starts Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 at 9 p.m. Pacific Time to 11:59 p.m. local time, Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016.

  • *NOTE: if you're an Amazon prime member that shared with 4 more "family" members, if you let your membership expire and try to use this (or any other new sub), you will lose those "family" members and new amazon policy is to only share with ONE other person.
  • You can't cancel your Prime member and get partial refund once you use Prime shipping feature (like order and shipped one item).
  • YMMV, some people in this thread mentioned they were abled to get a refund without canceling Prime. Some people mentioned they got rejected or only refund for few dollar. It is up to the CSR.
  • Some people ask for refund and CSR said they will refund them $26 without cancel their Prime. But later on those SDers found out their Prime was canceled. And of course those SDers lost their Prime Shipping Sharing members. Read the posts in this thread for more detail.

There are lots of us in this boat: What if we started or re-joined Prime during last years January Sale, and bought a gift membership for ourselves for this year? According to the directions people gave last January... we needed to Cancel our membership BEFORE applying the gift membership otherwise it would apply the price paid as a gift balance rather than extend the Prime membership because it was supposed to be for someone who did not already have Prime. I'm fine with that, but since we can no longer buy a gift membership and send it to ourselves at this price.... How long can we hold onto that Gifted membership? In other words. Is the smarter play to CANCEL NOW? (I only have a little over a week left) and sign up on this weekend's $73 offer? - and push my gift membership off for another year? - CAN WE EVEN DO THAT?

Will my self gifted Prime Membership from Jan 2015 that was supposed to be for Jan 2016 - Jan 2017 be good in Jan 2017 - Jan 2018 --> NEXT Year? Or does the value expire or need to be used by a certain time. It is due to arrive I believe 3 days before my expiration date. - TIA

If you renewed your Prime account prior to January 9, then you cannot get the price adjustment through chat. You have to cancel your Prime membership (only can cancel if you have NOT order using Prime shipping), and then signup for Prime again tomorrow when the deal takes effect. (You will get a prorated refund for the remainder of your cancelled membership).

I had a different experience that what is described above. I subscribed in June of 2015 and was able to get the adjustment through chat. I asked if I would be eligible and the rep said no but that she would give me a one time credit. A fellow coworker of mine also subscribed last year and was extended the same courtesy. YMMV.

Amazon will send your gift recipient an email on the day you choose, along with redemption instructions. The gift recipient can start their Prime membership right away. If the recipient is already a Prime member, the gift can be exchanged for an Amazon.com Gift Card. The one-year gift membership does not automatically renew, and is not eligible for promotional offers.

"Technically, this special discount is only valid for new members, but if you are already signed up you can still buy a gift subscription and email it to yourself. Then you have to cancel auto-renew on your existing Prime membership and wait for it to expire, so you can then use the $73 gift code for another year of Amazon Prime."

The sale begins at 9 a.m. Pacific time (Noon Eastern time) on Friday, January 15 and ends at 11:59 a.m. local time on Sunday, January 17.

If you dont want to go through the hassle of the new membership and yours doesn't expire until later this year, start a chat with amazon and they'll give you a credit for the $26.00 difference:

You are now connected to Meenatchi from Amazon.com

Me: I would like to take advantage of the $73.00 prime renewal without having to cancel my membership

Meenatchi: Hello, my name is Meenatchi. I'm here to help you today.

Me: hello, i'd like to renew my prime membership for the promotional rate of $73.00 for the year
but my current membership doesnt expire until July 18
how can i do that?

Meenatchi: I can understand you concern.
I've refunded you the amount of $26 in your account.
You'll see the refund in the next 2-3 business days.
Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
For some reason, I failed to read your post correctly- and I thought you said you would lose your friends and family if you do this!

Eek!!

That's what I was wondering too. Are we grandfathered in on the friends and family if we keep auto renew?

Link updated in the original post. I was able to price adjust my subscription but I had just renewed like a week back. Not sure if it's applicable to existing members. Try your luck and give them a call. Worth trying.
