skylake non-k overclocking

tornadog 3,902 420 January 16, 2016 at 07:26 AM
Last month, I finally decided to upgrade to skylake because of all the deals going on. I got the following;

i5 6500 from Jet for 140
MSI Z170A Krait Gaming from Tigerdirect for 40
Crucial 16gb DDR4 2400 from Jet for 47

I read about non-K skylakes being able to overclock and want to try it. Is it simple as raising the bclk frequency and voltage?

Not 100% sure on this but in the past its been mostly playing with the bclk if available. I would be careful with the voltage for sure.

I got the same deal/same CPU and have not been able to successfully make it happen yet on an Asrock board. Warranted I only spent 10 minutes trying...

Let us know if you get it to work and what your stable settings are.

Play with BCLK little at a time, up the voltage slightly until you get it to function and lower it until you find the sweet spot where it is stable on the lowest voltage possible.

Depending on the processor, you may not be able to play with the bclk and you are limited to playing with some bus speeds instead. Not as nice of a route and won't give you a great overclock anyway.

As for AsRock boards, you may be either SOL or need to roll back to an older bios. Intel threw a stink last year or so that ASROCK was allowing non-z overclock solutions. Not sure how, but Intel leaned on several mobo manufacturers until they removed that capability. Gave me a headache when I had to get a new board under warranty and my new one had all my cpu options gone.
