Site Search Upgrade: Relevancy Improvements BETA - YOUR FEEDBACK IS REQUESTED!

bryantq 2,264 1,355 January 20, 2016 at 01:43 PM
Greetings all!

As a part of a continued effort to improve search on Slickdeals, I'm happy to announce we've started to do a test on our relevancy algorithms.

In order to make the algorithm better and smarter, I need your help! Your feedback is critical so that I can adjust the algorithm based on the needs of our community. In this first step, we've made the algorithm much smarter so that it factors in: Time, Score, Title Weight, Expiration, Forum, Tags, and more!

To give it a shot, you need to be on the redesigned version of Slickdeals and choose "Relevancy" as your sort option...
Or you can just click here: http://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php?q=laptop&searcharea=deals&searchin=first&sort=relevance&modern_opt_in=1

To give feedback please reply with the url of the search you made, and what you thought could use improvement, or why you thought your results looked funny.

Let me know what you think!

Not interested in any kind of search results other than what one normally expects when entering search criteria. I don't want to be fed what an algorithm wants me to see instead. That's my feedback. Wink

Can something be done to fix the Category filter?
It doesn't work in search or in the Hot Deals Forum. Not sure where else, as those are all I check.
Thank you.

You're more than welcome to use sorting by newest Smilie To me, there's a lot of crap in there and actually poorer results.

Category filters are working for me in search. I suggest creating a new thread and putting some info in there about your particular search so we can help diagnose, but i'd like to keep this thread about the relevancy algorithm.

Ok, thanks. Yeah, wish sorting by newest could be improved.

There isn't much to improve. By definition Newest is one factor and should only take into account time

I used "newest" since you said it, as "the alternative" to selecting "Relevancy".
I should have said "I wish the Search function could be improved, without having to just be fed undesirable results via "Relevancy" sorting, when what is actually desired is to get more precise search results, with CHOSEN sorting, filtering, etc.

newest is the default. relevancy doesn't give "undesirable" results and in fact does what you're asking, we're making the relevance smarter about the results it returns by not just factoring in time only which is the default.

Got it. "it factors in: Time, Score, Title Weight, Expiration, Forum, Tags, and more!".
Some of which I find undesirable as factors to determine what I get back in a search result.
No further discussion is necessary. Thank you Smilie

Edit: But I will leave you with this.
Here's a quick example of your smart search irking me:

Searched "Bounty". It picked up a Kohl's deal because on the Kohl's deal page layout, over in side bar "Popular Deals" there was a deal shown for Bounty paper towels.
And there are many more search results produced there for same side bar deal reason.
Sorry, not what one finds as desirable.

That appears in both the default search and the new one, so the fact that it appears at all has nothing to do with the algorithm. You'l see that if you compare the default (newest) sort versus the new relevancy sort, more items with the word "bounty" appear in the title, closer to the top, bringing the more relevant results to the top. This is the intention of relevancy sort.

Both result sets have that kohls deal, and the reason it appears is because the OP linked to a product for a bounty hunter t-shirt (its in the url, which is why you cant just search for it). Search results new and old never pull things from the right column when matching keywords.

For your edification: the url in the OP was: kohls.com/product/prd-2159288/star-wars-bounty-hunter-raglan-tee-men.jsp?color=White%20Black

Both result sets have that kohls deal, which by the way are never triggered by RCM - that being said, I'm going to take a look as to why that's appearing because its a good question Smilie
Ok. I have just the last couple of days been viewing via rededign. This particular issue is not apparent when searching via classic, that I have noticed anyway.

Yeah, i see what you mean - im guessing that the redesign version is slightly more relaxed about matching within the url, which i think is something I can fix Smilie thanks.

Hi, I was forwarded here from this thread. I've had in interest in two features for a few years now (as you'll see the date on that thread).

1. Allow my searches to default to TITLES ONLY. Almost every one of my searches I only want the title searched (e.g. Samsung), not the mishmash of what could be in the first post (e.g. "this Vizio TV is just like the Samsung").

2. I also would love to see a user-defined site search option whereby ONLY the Hot Deals forum is searched - I get sick of mucking through Freebies and other forum results. Honestly I would love to see the same as the Edit Options : Exclude Forums from "Get New Posts": only I want this to be for a search.

For both of these, I wish they were in my default search setting - I spend too much time changing out the search defaults to get to what I want.

Thanks for listening, I hope even one of these could be implemented.

I'm on a Mac and using Safari. The new search box hangs way down, and is preventing me from clicking any of the links or controls along the top of the page.

When I scroll down, since now unfortunately the upper part of the page is persistent, the dangling search box prevents me from clicking forum links at the top of the page. PLEASE fix this!!!!!!!!
