any idea of the physical dimensions and if this may serve as an HTPC well for 1080p @60? I notice it has Win 8.1 Pro so I think it qualifies for the $20 WMC download.

1. I don't think you can still get the $20 WMC download.
2. This does not have HDMI port
3. I don't think this has a PCI-e slot.

Suggest finding a Windows 7 machine on eBay?

I would avoid if you want think HDMI PCI-e card would make it a good HTPC. Add on cards typically generate a great amount of fan noise almost all the time and annoying unless you're blasting your volume all the time whereas onboard video cards are at a minimum. I have this J2900 from Acer and it works fine as an HTPC playing all your h.264/265 perfectly fine but I got a HDMI on it. I would hold out for a HTPC with onboard HDMI

People see cheap and ask HTPC?
No, a real HTPC cost more than a desktop now due to DEMAND and little part sizes.

Actually there are many add-on cards that are fanless. The advantage of add-on card is immense and usually provide faster speed, more memory, and stability as it draws heat away from motherboard and doesn't use system memory. Other than cost, there is NO disadvantage using an add-on card.

yeah i forgot about passive cards but it's all overkill for an Intel J2900 HTPC

a slower processor IS the reason why you would need an add-on card to offload video processing to it..

but since this doesn't have an pci-e... this is moot and unfortunately not a good deal.

if this had a pci-e then it would be a great htpc, otherwise, the lack of HDMI ruined the deal.

Wow, HDMI could have made this a decent system for HTPC use but I don't think you'd be able to get audio out using a dvi to hdmi cable. It's like they really cut down every component - only 100mb ethernet, wireless is single stream N (only 72mb), only 1 usb3 on the back, no mic input on the front. It's a shame as the j2900 isn't a bad chip and 8gb ram/1tb drive is pretty good.

As it is, this would make a decent kids email/facebook/youtube/OpenOffice system or kitchen PC or something but not much else.

Edit: system specs are here [hp.com] to go with the mobo info above.

8GB ram to share for video processing and you still think it's important to spend on an additional video card for and HTPC? I sense that you want to be right so have at it, good job on being right.. as to HTPC needs like the OP mentioned, you shouldn't require an additional video card with modern chips today to handle the intensexcore video streaming and playback of most videos like a J2900. More power to you though with your pcmasterrace builds for HTPC. My J2900 handles video like a champ as HTPC
