Retail giant Amazon.com will start adding sales tax to purchases from Colorado consumers next month.
Colorado is among the 23 states where sales tax is not currently applied to purchases by the Seattle-based company.

“I can confirm that Amazon will be required to collect sales tax in Colorado beginning on Feb. 1,” said an Amazon spokeswoman.

The company would not elaborate further.
Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), once famous for avoiding sales taxes, has in recent years agreed to apply them in many states as it opened more distribution centers to speed delivery to consumers.

As one of the growing majority that now pays tax (in both NC and FL, where I have property) I can tell you that you will probably also start getting your Prime packages shipped USPS, because you'll have a "local" distribution center. I now do about a tenth of the business with them that I used to.

Big corporations who park billions of dollars off-shore should also pay their fair share. But that's none of my business Smilie

Amazon's come up with a nice strategy. They fought the states for the longest time and they are now quietly building warehouses in states where they did not have a presence in return for a nice tax rebate. Amazon built a warehouse in my township in NJ two years ago in return for a PILOT agreement for the next 20 years. NJ state officials say that the state will collect $30 million in tax revenues from Amazon sales.

So, in short Amazon gets a sweetheart deal from the state and in return collects tax to remit to the state.

"They robbed a bank, so why can't I too?" Illegal is still illegal. This rationalization isn't healthy.

I was fine moving to a state with sales tax, and paying it. After all, we're still much better off than citizens of most other nations. State sales tax gets you a lot more benefits back that you will notice than federal taxes. It's federal taxes that should be trimmed more than anything else - other than "military protection", I don't see nearly as much being provided to me as the state-level does.
