High quality 64k AAC-HE streams on 3G or WiFi; sound amazing and much better than 128k MP3.
Low bandwidth 32k aacPlus streams on slower cell networks; sound as good as 128k MP3.

This is dramatically different from Pandora. SomaFM is one of the original online radio stations. This isn't interactive music like Pandora but instead they broadcast meticulously curated playlists that cater to very specific styles. I can't stress the impecably curated playlist part enough. Imagine radio stations so custom tailored that they cater to the sub-sub-genre. They are focused mainly on chill/downtempo music (see Groove Salad, Beat Blender, Secret Agent, Illinois Street Lounge, Drone Zone, etc.) but they have others that cater to a variety of styles. If you see the stations I mentioned before, each one of these cater to specific style of chill music. Each one is so well curated you pretty much never here a song that doesn't fit the style of the station. If you feel like songs with sultry female vocals, you can pull up Lush, want songs that remind you of the jazzy 60's james bond style Secret Agent is for you, want some chill-out to sleep to that doesn't have any beats then dial up Drone Zone, etc. It is this attention to detail that has earned them their loyal followers.

A bit of background about them: They were broadcasting on the internet back when most people had dial up. They came about at the same times as jazzfm, jazzradio, Massinova, GrooveRadio, Digitally Imported, Live365, Trancemission, etc. Many of these have died in the passing decade and a half. They made it through the DMCA, copyright royalty wars, etc. They DO NOT have advertising of ANY type, instead relying on user donations to provide for the bandwidth and royalty payments. They came about in a time when it wasn't even known if and how internet streaming would be legal.

Long story short, if you like chill/downtempo or just like the concept of high quality indie music in the most imppecably curated playlist form this is for you.
SOMA has been around forever, and this app has been $5 forever too.

Great Ambient and EDM-ish stations, especially Groove Salad, been pulling them from Shoutcast until now. Thanks OP.
I'm not a Pandora user so I couldn't tell you.

From the Google Play page:
If you're on 3G or WiFi, you have access to our high quality 64k AAC-HE streams which sound amazing and much better than 128k MP3. And our low bandwidth 32k aacPlus streams work on slower cell networks, and still sound as good as 128k MP3 streams in most cases.

So you can listen either via your data plan or WiFi.

If you keep the same Email address tied to your google account (i.e. GMail), you don't lose anything. You'll just have to reload the apps that are in your Google Play library onto your new or reset phone.

So my question is if they are listener supported how are they going to continue if they are losing the income from the app and have no commercials?

Thanks for the heads up. I normally use Tunein radio but I'll also give Soma a try.

Is this temporarily free or is it free from now on?

I only see two choices:
1. Temporarily free, to drum up interest, then back to paid.
2. Change in business model to free from now on.

I've looked but couldn't find anything.
If it's the latter, I'll go back to either Google Play music or my own extensive collection on Power Amp.

Yay! I have been eyeing this app for a while as I am a fan of browser Soma FM and on Roku. On the go I have been listening to it via Tune In app, but it wasn't as smooth and the stream wasn't stable.
Soma FM playlists and stations are much better than Pandora, MixRadio etc - they are very well selected and curated and feature a much wider and eclectic range of styles. It is also part of T-Mobile Music Freedom, while Tune In is not.
Thank you, OP!

The T-Mobile info is awesome! The last Music Freedom app I used was Milk & I wasn't all that crazy about it. I will definitely be checking this out. Thanks for all the background!
