I'm in Seattle, WA.
The seller's company is in Compton, California.
Why do I get charged tax?
Seller answers:

Thank you for your inquiry. Here is the Washington tax law governing why we have to collect sales tax:

RCW 82.08.050
Buyer to pay, seller to collect tax — Statement of tax — Exception — Penalties — Contingent expiration of subsection.
(1) The tax imposed in this chapter must be paid by the buyer to the seller. Each seller must collect from the buyer the full amount of the tax payable in respect to each taxable sale in accordance with the schedule of collections adopted by the department under the provisions of RCW 82.08.060.

A link to the specific rules is below:

I would look for your item somewhere else. I live in California and I always have to pay tax when I buy from a seller that is also in California but if the seller is in any other state I'm not charged for tax.

Sales tax is actually "sales and use" tax. For items you buy out of state, you are supposed to send the sales tax into your taxing authority. Almost no one does. There are cases where they tracked large purchases made on credit cards to out of state sellers that did not collect sales tax and sent bills to the purchaser. I agree, find another seller that will not charge sales tax to out of state buyers. But keep in mind, per the law, you owe sales tax on all purchases you make, regardless where the sale occurs.
