This isnt a good deal, and I can say that because I use an X220 everyday that I bought on ebay for $190 shipped...and that was the high end of pricing (did not want to deal with cracks or dents)! You can find X220 machines on ebay all day for less than this...and at this price and higher, youre looking at the i7 variant with IPS included.

The i7 is especially worth it because it has a functioning usb 3.0 port whereas this i5 one does not.

If you want guaranteed IPS screen without dealing with upgrading the screen (easier than most machines, but still a pain), get the tablet version, which only comes with IPS screens. However, you will lose the USB 3.0, which is non existant, even with the i7 version)

I am an x series evangelist. As for the usability of the x220 itself...it is a tremendous gem of a laptop with lots of potential: the two drive bays (one is msata), two memory slots with DDR3 1866 support, stellar keyboard, huge community/mod support (with many options for upgraded bios), easy repairability (you can take it apart to individual parts in about 20 minutes), versatile displayport (which can output 2k without issue, and be converted into HDMI) and wonderful hackintosh support made the X220 a no-brainer for a used workhorse. You can even use an eGPU with the expresscard slot. Yes...you can game on an X220! If you get the tablet version you get multitouch options and onenote usability. If you break ANYTHING on this machine, you can find cheap, easy to swap in parts on ebay. Everything from the bezel pieces, to the palmrest, to the rubber feet and screws, to the LCD and the mainboard itself, can be swapped in easily!

The only thing, the one achilles heel of this machine is its low res 720p screen. That does give me pause when I am doing heavy multitasking. However, I am willing to take this sacrifice for the tremendous bank for the buck features i listed above. I keep the machine docked 90% of the time, and the 16 gigs of memory and dual SSDs absolutely crush my prior laptop, an asus ux31a. Fck soldered in memory and proprietary storage and internal batteries!

Aftermarket batteries are also super cheap, as are all of the accessories (ultrabase, mini dock).

I dont recommend getting this machine unless you get one with IPS out of the box. Even though the machine itself is worth keeping and using...the screen upgrade adds 25-30% to the cost...at which point you have to look at cost-benefit analysis.

I got an aftermarket battery ($30, makes machine last 7 hours), USB 3.0 card ($15, works in OSX), 850 EVO msata 250gb (for dual boot), AC wireless card ($30, for 3x3 support) and the ultrabase (to add a THIRD HARD DRIVE!), and i need nothing else.

That's actually not bad. You could try and fight for less on ebay but it wouldn't be significantly cheaper.

i've been looking for a laptop to connect to a tv and projector for powerpoint presentations, i see this does not have an HDMI port but does have display port. Would I run into any video quality problems using a display port to hdmi converter?

that version is currently $209, but I have seen it drop down to 180 for sales. I have been waiting for an SSD version to go back in stock and pretty happy about the price.

This beats getting a chromebook, even if it's 4-5 years old.

This looks like it would be a good machine to hook up to my tv for streaming and light web browsing. However, there is no mention of whether it has an HDMI port.

Don't these usually have a Mini Displayport, which I could use to connect to the tv with an HDMI adapter?
