  • Ooma got rid of about 1500 units of Ooma Hub users which has no taxes and no fees. Some customers who have the ooma core were facing discontinuation of service sometime post March 31, 2014 unless they pay to upgrade to new hardware and accept new terms and conditions. These customers were part of the original beta team known as the "White Rabbit" VIP program.

Q. Aren't those fees mostly federal/state fees/taxes that would be raising any landline by the same amount too?

A. They include regulatory compliance fees, 911 service fees, the Federal Universal Service Charge (U.S. customers only) and state or province and local taxes, fees and surcharges. And from https://go.ooma.com/tax_calculator , click on Regulatory Compliance Fee (what's this?). It also includes.....
(3) costs Ooma incurs administering, billing, collecting and making required tax and regulatory filings and complying with other regulations; (That should include all the expenses for operating the computer servers, CSR, etc, administering cost.)

If you are old Ooma core (no tax/fee) owner, you should have received this email stated old Ooma core won't get any future enhancement and very limited customer support. People in previous thread stated if your Ooma core died, any new device activation will get new TOS (meaning will have monthly tax/fee).

Dear xxxx,

As our first product, the Ooma Hub allowed us to launch and grow our unique vision of how phone service could be delivered over the Internet with high quality and advanced features. We are proud of the success it has enjoyed since Ooma made its debut.

Having launched our second generation product, the Ooma Telo, in 2009 with higher-performance and more advanced functionality, we have now made the decision to concentrate our activities on the Telo going forward. Your Hub will continue to function on the Ooma network and operate as before, but we will not be providing any future enhancements and will be limiting our customer support activities going forward.

I got this a few months ago and love it. The service is not totally free you have to pay tax every month. My monthly bill is like 4 bucks. It's crystal clear with no long delay or echo on the call. I matched this with a set of panosonic phones to cover the whole house.

not bad but look into an Obitalk device with a Google Voice number. same hardware price and no monthly bill. Ooma requires paying several dollars a month in taxes, and fees. Though I believe you do get 911 from Ooma, Obi no 911 for free service.

We love ours and have had it for years. Remember it's only as good as your internet connection. We do pay $2 to $3 a month in taxes. Good deal.

Thanks! I've been on the fence about switching from Vonage for a while but at this price I can't resist!

I currently have Vonage. Can I make international calls with this device for free? Or do I have to purchase separate international calling plan from somewhere else?

I had Obi a few years ago. I'm going with Ooma now. Here's why, and maybe some of these are no longer issues:
  1. Looks like you can port your number directly to Ooma. When I switched to Obi, I had to port my number to a T-Mobile SIM card, and then port again to Google Voice.
  2. At the time, there was talk if Google was going to end Google Voice. I'm not sure if that threat is still around?
  3. Obi doesn't have E911. You can buy it thru a 3rd party for about $2/month.
In the end, the extra $2/month for Ooma is worth (1) the ease of number port, (2) the stability, and (3) E911 support... for me at least. I can certainly see Obi being a better solution if you can use a new number and don't care about 911.

I got grandfathered in from my original Ooma hub and don't have to pay the monthly taxes and fees (but I do pay them $10/month for the Premier service, so I can blacklist spam calls and forward my number). Unfortunately, the fee-free status only applies to my current Telo unit and I wonder if I should get another in case lightning gets this unit through the surge protector too (like it did my original hub) or if I should just give up the service and open my unused OBI if I end up having to pay $14+ every month on any new unit..

why is this a better deal than MagicJack - i renewed for 5yr = $99 plus a 'free' 5400mah capacity portable battery pack for recharging cell phones and other USB powered devices, even with taxes on the sale and shipping fees it was still less than $2/mo.

Ooma offers international calling, you can either buy their world plan for unlimited called to 60 countries, or pay by the minute. http://www.ooma.com/telo-international/

My ooma telo has been shelved away in the closet for the past 4 months.

Buy a obihai, save yourself on the monthly fees. I think it is a superior product.

Got this, what is it now, a week or two ago on the last Groupon go-around. One of the better investments, switched from AT&T U-verse phone (~$40/mo) to Ooma's $4.xx a month. Clarity is leaps and bounds better than AT&T.
My refurb unit arrived in great condition, not a scratch on it (not that I've cared if it did have scuffs or marks).
Highly recommended if you're on the fence.
