Shopping for Laptop via Ebay with SSD. Replacement for 10 year old Asus Gaming Lap Top

tennis4789 890 383 February 17, 2016 at 01:30 PM More eBay Deals
I currently have an Asus G1-SN with Windows 7 and using a 128 SSD. I'm happy with how it works except it's wearing out.

------------------------------------
Specs are:
Graphics Processor NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS - 512 MB VRAM

MEMORY
Max Supported Size 4 GB
Technology DDR2 SDRAM
Speed 667 MHz

PROCESSOR / CHIPSET
CPU Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 / 1.83 GHz
Number of Cores Dual-Core
Cache L2 - 2 MB
64-bit Computing Yes
Chipset Type Mobile Intel PM965 Express
----------------------------------

I just replaced the Battery but now the touchpad right click button just broke and the fan has been making bad noises for quite some time and the DVD rom is broke (not that really need DVD rom)

It was a gaming laptop released back in 2006 (10 years old). Paid about $1,000 from Best Buy.

Since upgrading the Hard Drive to SSD, it pretty much does what I want except it's wearing out. I pretty much surf the web. I don't game.

But I do want something that might last me another 8 years. I could spend up to $1,000.

I plan to buy via Ebay since I have some gift cards and want to avoid state tax. I'm not in a big hurry. & hoping to buy when there are 4X points back in Ebay Bux.

What would be the equivalent in today's processors? How little could I spend to get something equivalent?

The windows 7 windows experience index just came out at 3.5 because of the processor.
WEI graphics 4.6. Gaming graphics 5.9.
Also, I do hook up a 24 inch dell monitor to use the laptop screen and the monitor.

Component Details Subscore Base score Determined by lowest subscore
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz 3.5 ----3.5
Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB ---4.4
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS ---4.6
Gaming graphics 2303 MB Total available graphics memory ----5.9
Primary hard disk 34GB Free (106GB Total) ----7.6
Windows 7 Professional

TIA

Anyone? I dug through computer yesterday and found some bloated programs and found some malware. Computer running little faster today but still has mentioned HW issues.

I'm guessing they don't hardly use Windows Experience Index anymore cause it would show almost all new laptops should be in 7 range. Would be really good starting point for comparing/shopping laptops.

Also, seems like some of WEI items should be weighted more heavily. A hard drive I use almost all the time. So with a crap hard drive - the experience will be crap no matter what I'm doing. Where as gaming graphics could be a 1.0 but If I'm just surfing the internet wouldn't make a difference.

My thought is that the hard drive is one of the MOST important components in a laptop.

TIA for any input.

I wouldn't spend up to 1k if you don't game.

Go up to the search box on this site. type in "laptop" and view the current deals. There are too many to list.

I would look in the range of 500-700 depending on the screensize and formfactor your looking for.

ebay will limit your options though.

I've been researching. I learned MS won't support Windows 7 after 2020. I'm going to TRY to keep this one going for another 4 years. As you said, Soo many tempting good deals on SD though. Must Resist.

Also, after researching CPUs, Mine isn't as horrible as I thought. When I look at the whole package not just the CPU.

If I were to buy right now - I want a SSD and a discrete graphics card and a 14 to 16 inch "gaming" laptop with a very good CPU. It's more of hobby for me. Not really a need. Plus if I can next laptop to last 10 years I'll get my money's worth.

The last game I really got into was Skyrim so maybe went the sequel to Skryim comes out I'll get a gaming laptop.

Using Ebay does make it more challenging but if I can find what I want seems to be so much cheaper with 5X points, not taxed, and then buying discounted GCs. Thought about grabbing one of Craigslist but 1. people's prices are normally higher than SD deals. 2. Could be stolen or 3. Might have some problem seller knows about but doesn't disclose.

Side note - on CL someone was selling a laptop with a WEI of 1.0 with a faster CPU than mine. Guessing the weak link was the disk drive.

Couldn't resist.

Pulled the trigger on this deal:

$750
Dell Inspiron 15.6" 4K Touchscreen Laptop: i5-6300HQ, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, GTX 960M

I had hit my $5,000 limit on using GCs so I ended up with $300 OOP. Oh well. Looking forward to new machine. Hope it lasts as long as my current one did. Going to upgrade the RAM and put in a new SSD.

Yeah I saw that deal too. really nice deal and you didn't have to spend 1k Wink

I think the 4K is overkill and 15.6 is too big for me also I personally don't use/want touch screen at all. But all those are still excellent features and the price is really nice.
