This is a steal at this price. The lens is a very strong contender with the Canon equivalent that runs for roughly twice as much.

Helpful reviews for those too lazy to google:

J.H.C! Ya'll are beating up my wallet! I want this lens so bad but not sure if I should do it right now... I already have a Nikon 70-200 VR1.... but I have been telling myself that I wanted to get a Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC since I prefer the zoom ring being further out rather than where it is on the Nikon...

UGH! Maybe it will be out of stock by the time I make a decision? Stick Out Tongue

This is a good deal for a non-gray market version of the lens. It's the normal price for gray-market though:

Grey market is the same quality lens, just not the same honored warranty, right?
Trying to better understand it.

Usually gray market stuff is a lot cheaper, but manufacturer may not honor the warranty. The thing is that lens hardly ever go bad if it was ok when you received it. Only way to really break them is mishandling or drop them etc. And you can always buy a extra warranty separately. Even gray market stuff offer full refund for defects or a replacement within first few weeks.

buying gray market at $870 plus warranty will certainly bring the price close to U.S model having 6 years warranty..which is a much better deal.

how does this one compares to the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens?

The Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR2 is considered sharper but only by a hair, it is also much more expensive. Many people say the Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC offers roughlt 90% of what the VR2 brings to the table and at a better price point and in this case here at half the price!

If I had the cash available I would buy it myself but am loathe to run up my credit cards for something I cannot pay off soonish.

One thing to consider with this lens, if you're not planning on keeping it for a while, is that resale will not hold up nearly as well as nikon or canon versions. If you're planning on having it for a long time, maybe it's a moot point.

I just picked up a canon 70-200 2.8 is ii for 1500 and don't expect that resale number to change much, if at all, in the next few years. I considered both tamron and sigma but couldn't justify losing 40-50% of the value if I decided to sell it.

That doesn't mean this is a bad lens, I've heard plenty of good things about it. However, nikon shooters will prefer it vs canon shooters since the zoom rotational direction matches the nikon convention, not the canon, so folks who shoot canon will have to get used to turning the opposite way. Not a huge deal, but a minor annoyance for sure. FWIW, Sigma matches the canon convention and is comparable to this lens - they each have their advantages and disadvantages, so you need to research what's important to you.

One other item to mention is that this lens will have some focus breathing that isn't present on canon/nikon versions - so if your subject is close you'll get more like 170mm at the long end instead of 200mm.
