FYI. I picked up one of these for my daughter almost a year ago. It works great.

Appears to legitimately be $20 this time (in the past, they've offered phones at this price but required you to pay for the first month premium service).

I paid $30 for mine a year ago, great condition except I needed a replacement battery. A great way to test the FreedomPop service, but this device would be sorely lacking as an adult's everyday phone. Mine is mostly a media player now. Good idea on using it as a kid's phone too.

might get it. I use Kyocera Hydra on Ringplus, the device is waterproof but so damn slow, as much as I love it (got it for free via TCB cashback hustle), I still cannot use it as it takes ages to open an app, Chrome or update any apps via Play store.

1 GB RAM is tough on Android, especially on an older thing like this Optimus F3.

If you really want speed, go with the LG G2. It's $80 right now, but with 2 GB RAM you shouldn't have any trouble opening apps or even doing some multitasking.

You can add it to an existing account, but you won't be able to send data to and from your 2 phones then (via the freedom firends plan).
It's much better to just use a different email for each device.

Yes, generally each new FreedomPop device has to be tied to a different account using a unique email, unfortunately. If you are using Gmail, you could try adding a period to your email name (so john.smith@gmail.com goes to the same place as johnsmith@gmail.com).

I bought this phone about a year ago for my son and it has worked pretty well. The kids tend to over load the phones with thier games though, so I ended up moving him to a LG Volt. Now this phone is mostly used for a hotspot, which it does really well and the battery lasts a long time with that task.
There's quite a bit of help setting up the tethering app in one of the old posts.
Good phone for the money as long as you're not expecting a flagship phone for $20, and like someone else mentioned... a great way to try out the freedompop service. Don't forget to search for the "freedom friends" discussion to get an extra 500mb a month for free. Also search for the discussion on downgrading all the extra fees if you don't want to pay those after the first month trial.

Not sure but it sounds like you received a dud or possibly a random software issue. I also got the Hydro and use it on FP, no noticeable lag even with the 1 GB ram. You might want to factory reset yours if you hadn't already. That's what I did the day I received mine from FP.
