FIOS: Actiontec vs Quantum Gateway

Ancalagon 3,997 293 February 23, 2016 at 03:47 PM
It's the GEN3I model Actiontec, I'm hooked up with MOCA from the ONT.

My 100/100 service upgrade comes with the Quantum Gateway at no extra cost. Which is a better router? One better at serving Wi-Fi? Both just as reliable? Torrent performance?

They said I could just send back the QG if I want to keep the Actiontec so I have options.

They both have Wi-Fi. Whether I should use that Wi-Fi or another router is a question for another thread.

Not trying to be rude, but I can Google specs.

What's hard to find on Google is whether the QG is actually a better, more reliable router, hence why I'm asking here.

Actually there are lots of discussion on various forums asking exactly what you're asking.

I have the quantum on the 50/50 plan and it works fine. Aside from the occasional Linux ISO I don't torrent much though, so I couldn't tell you how well it works if it needs to maintain large nat tables.

The ones I found were not recent, they were more speculative and were dated around when Verizon first started deploying them so the data sample was small. They were also often contradictory.

Regarding dual band, the feature itself doesn't mean it's good at it. It may be a newer feature poorly implemented.

I'm just looking for experiences and comparisons from actual users.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'll look specifically into NAT table performance.

100/100? 100 Mbps upload speed for home user? Comcrap only has 25 Mbps upload speed and they want $149.95/mo.

Home user, yes, I'm getting 100/100 for $60/month. I could have gotten 150/150 for $70/month but that's overkill. 300/300 is $170/month, or 500/500 for $270. Symmetrical 100mbit is plenty, although 150/150 is probably the best "value".

FIOS was nearly a non negotiable for me when we were house hunting. I was stuck with mandatory Comcast in an apartment complex for 2 years and it was misery.

Quantum has really good wifi actually. See if you can talk Verizon into giving it to you for free.
