Profile - Unable to change avatar

Bozanimal 11 10 February 25, 2016 at 06:26 AM
Whenever I try to upload an avatar or use an avatar hosted on another site I get the following page: http://slickdeals.net/forums/profile.php?do=tmpavatar

That page is blank and the process never completes. I am able to select from among the existing avatars, but am unable to use my custom avatar. I have tried this in both Edge and Chrome and with JPGs, GIFs, and PNG files.

Thank you,

Boz

Welcome to SD!

New users can't use custom avatars until they've lost new user status. The specific requirements to lose new user status aren't specified (to combat spammers), so go about participating on the site and you'll be able to access that feature soon.

Makes sense, thanks!

I was just about to email you, or post here actually, and I saw this. I was getting the same thing and thought it was a site bug.

I'd suggest disabling the controls for uploading an avatar if you're a "New User" so people aren't confused by it. Maybe add a "New Users cannot use custom avatars" note too. That wouldn't interfere with the combating of spammers and would make it clear. Just a suggestion, anyway.

I agree. I have been trying to change mine for the past 10 minutes and I'm stuck with this cucumber avatar.

It's celery... quite a back story for that one actually.
But you should be able to select from any of the generic ones I believe.

Yeah, that's definitely a good suggestion and something we've got on our list. It certainly isn't clear enough now that new users don't have avatar upload permissions. Smilie
