Hello everyone,

I am in US on a work visa with my spouse who is a dependent and we live in Los Angeles, California. I received W2 from my company and have a few questions regarding the best option of filing last years and this years federal and state taxes. I have not filed last year's return federal and state and want to know how I should file the return for 2014.

I have read previous posts for taxes and everyone has praised taxact. I checked TaxAct for filing 2014 taxes Federal and state and this is the link https://www.taxact.com/product_se...1.76&sc=15... It is $14.99 Federal + $13.99 DAS= 28.98 total and state additional). Is there another option i.e. not paying the DAS or it needs to be paid.
TurboTax Deluxe which costs $34.99 https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-t...-Return/Ho...
Freetax for filing previous year taxes http://www.freetaxusa.com/prior_year.jsp which is free for federal and state costs 12.95. How is freetax software.

As well as after filing 2014 taxes can I file this year's taxes simultaneously without waiting for previous year refund? My taxes are simple and want to know what is the easiest and best option of filing taxes?

Thank you who answer this.

I can't say easiest way to do 2014, but I use HRblock Deluxe+state+FedEfile for about $25 bought in Dec/Jan every year. I then just paper file state once complete.

Here's an example of prices for this time of year.

For reference, you may be able to do free fed efile thru following link. Taxes are due by 4/15 of every year, thus I expect you'll pay some type of penalty for 2014 (FYI).

I would recommend doing 2014 first and then go to 2015...just in case their are carry-overs which are not that common, but not completely un-common.

I use TurboTax and have been doing so for the last 10 years. I use the free federal filing and mail in my state taxes.

I find the cheapest option then paper file. Usually e-filing costs as much as the software in the first place. Unless you have a huge refund (and want the $$ quickly), there's no reason to e-file. also if you are getting a huge refund, you're doing something "wrong".

I am a newbie and wanted to use one of the tax filing software which would make it easier.

For filing 2014 taxes I want to know if I can use TurboTax Deluxe 2014(previous year version) and will I be able to process Federal and State taxes without paying extra for filing state taxes?

Do I need to buy a new TurboTax program every year?

Yes. Because TurboTax is built for a specific tax year, you'll need TurboTax 2015 to file your 2015 tax return. There is no way to update your TurboTax 2014 (or earlier) software to handle the 2015 tax law requirements.

Tax laws change, tax forms get updated, and new forms are created - especially lately, with the Affordable Care Act requirements.

eFiling is always free for federal. You can print out the state forms from TurboTax and mail them in to avoid fees for state.

I know it is free for this year though I wanted to know what is the best way of filing year(2014) taxes and which software or online option to take as there is very limited information available to file previous year taxes? Tax is already withheld so I don't owe any taxes and hopefully there should be a refund.

you can't e-file 2014 taxes.

What deductions/income do you have, anything special or do you file 1040ez or 1040a

basic taxes are pretty simple and you can get the forms/instructions from irs.gov
