hi slowtech,

Thanks for the feedback! fyi there are different teams working on the apps vs redesign, so it may be helpful to post app suggestions/feedback in the mobile section of sis Smilie
ok, don't understand why somebody who doesn't even work for the company has to forward the info from one dept to another, but out of the goodness of my heart, here it is. btw, had this same experience at staples, i posted to their facebook page and they were like- go tell so and so dept and come back and tell us what they said. yeah, no, i don't think so......i guess when we moved to the digital age and we don't write memos on triplicate forms to other depts anymore, we can't write memos at all........like my stupid android moto g phone that doesn't have any built in memo function. apple for the win.

well, can't say i really read my email anymore either since it's been taken over by corporate newsletter ads.

Hey CD, I have a VERY STRONG BELIEF that MOST of the 46 guests Are REALLY SD Members. I DESPISE the SD app, & almost always look at SD through Google. the APP is. time waster and not user friendly to me at all. I rarely use my laptop anymore so I presume a lot of other SD members are also viewing while mobile & not using the app. I only am using the app right now so I can reply to your post. I sure wish SD would fix the major bugs in the app--can't do many things through the app. Thanks for all of your awesome match ups. :hugs: heart

I have to say this is me also, when I am on my tablet or smart phone.
personally i tried and deleted the app years ago and almost always use safari to access slickdeals on my ipad2 but i almost always sign in. i have to do that too on my moto g but i avoid that if at all possible b/c it's just way too tiny but occasionally i will suffer the horrible experience to post a picture. if i can, i post it to ig first and then just post a link to sd. way easier.
and there should be some sort of non-deal category for threads like these. don't remember if i also have to pick a deal category for chat and lounge threads.

Hey Guys -

This past year we have done a ton of work on both the Android and iOS Slickdeals apps. They are completely redesigned and re-architected. Both apps are 99%+ crash free (after a ton of back end improvements), and we are working hard on improving that percentage further. The apps are fast and stable, and we're now focused on giving you an even better user experience.

Here at Slickdeals we really and truly want to know from you what is missing from the app, and when you tell us we will fix it, let you know when that feature is coming, or have a dialogue explaining why we may not plan add it. We have a small mobile team and a lot of initiatives we are working on to get to you, so stacking them in the right order is important and much of that is based on your feedback.

When we launched the redesigned apps, we invited anyone interested to join our Beta testing and let us know how you felt, made a ton of changes based on that input, and once we launched made all of our updates based on the additional great feedback you gave us.

So when you say you despise the app, that's totally cool if that's how you feel. But what I want you to know is that the more specificity you give us about what you despise, the faster we can improve the experience for you. From your feedback it looks like you want it to be easier to post a photo through the app - I completely understand and we are working on improving that flow. There are a lot of places in the apps where we can improve the experience of engaging in our forums, and the more specifics you give us the better we understand the pain points. What else would you like to see improved? Let us know!

One other thing I wanted to mention is that we also really worked hard to improve the Slickdeals experience through mobile web. There we've also really listened to your feedback and made a ton of enhancements, with many more to come. So if you don't want to use the apps and prefer to access Slickdeals through mobile web, that's fine. We want feedback there as well, let us know we are listening!

Thanks!

ok, i'm going to be very frank with you.

Here at Slickdeals we really and truly want to know from you what is missing from the app, and when you tell us we will fix it, let you know when that feature is coming, or have a dialogue explaining why we may not plan add it.

maybe this is true in your dept but this has not been my experience across the redesigns, esp *a dialogue explaining why we may not plan [to] add it*. there has been a huge improvement over the last major redesign about 6 yrs ago, which was extremely contentious and i won't get into, but even now it still feels like Head Bangmuch of the time.

just for example, in this thread that is about 18 months old, probably the biggest complaint has been about the whiteness and brightness of the redesign. with enough motivation i would go thru it and count how many unique complaints there were, yet there has been a deafening silence on the subject. it's like a black hole. personally, the result is that i've given up many months ago on the redesign.
http://slickdeals.net/e/7732095-ongoing-slickdeals-redesign-feedback-thread?t=7732095

wait, i take some of it back. the answer to the harsh whiteness and brightness was to re-support the midnight theme. so now the choices are polar opposites, bright white or deep BLACK. it's almost rather spiteful. we refuse to change the white or add a medium-toned skin like the hybrid as a compromise. but here, have the total opposite of bright white. it's like Goldilocks, this bed is too hard, this bed is too soft. but there is no third option, nothing in the middle.

From your feedback it looks like you want it to be easier to post a photo through the app - I completely understand and we are working on improving that flow.

i've complained about this from day one, which is when i got my ipad2 around 3-4 yrs ago and i have been very vocal about this throughout. if it's still not viable, sorry to say, but the time has long past where i would at this point download the app and use it. things have an expiration date. *time and tide wait for no man.*- either
from St Marher in 1225 or Chaucer's Prologue to the Clerk's Tale in 1395.

after these many years both in technology and social media reckoning, or they could be the tides in the metaphor, i could no longer wait and found a workaround over a year ago, also an app, called Instagram, which i first used to post deals starting 63 weeks ago. after a protracted learning curve, 6 months, for this 2nd ig acct just for deals, i have 352 followers including a mod and follow 30 people, though some of them are just friends or former slickdealers who are now friends and mostly just lurk on sd. i could have way more followers but i don't put a dozen or so hashtags on any of my posts, usually just 1 or 2, nor do i run contests nor do giveaways to up my followers.

when i'm mobile and slickdealing, the most important medium are the pictures to use as references and the ability to post pictures for other like-minded people. i don't have time to read a lengthy description and a picture really is worth a thousand words. or a few thousand pixels. i don't look for new deals while i'm mobile. i look for the deals i've already done my homework on.

the way it's ended up working over the past yr is that b4 i shop, i search IG and take screenshots of what i'm interested in. while i shop, my shopping buddy searches IG and sends me pictures via FB messenger of items to look for. while i'm there i post pics of deals to instagram and share on facebook for RL friends and relatives.

we use FB messenger instead of whatsapp b/c is works on both computers and mobile devices while whatsapp is not computer accessible. also, when sd got rid of private groups, we eventually ended up on FB. some FB functions are not available while mobile so there again we use messenger. however, to archive pictures i use whatsapp b/c on fb messenger you cannot access or file just the pictures and they get lost in messenger.

some stores like many wags, cvs' and dollar generals do not have wifi so i have to wait to come home to post to IG/FB. and then if i remember, i'll post the IG link to the respective SD threads.

imo, if the picture posting function had been streamlined years ago, everyone would be reposting pictures from SD to IG/FB instead of the current situation where we are reposting IG pics to SD.

i do remember the one day fiasco slickdeals had w/ that pop-up asking if every comment should be posted to facebook. i know thru a recent convo w/ marmotto iirc, that there is a button to post a thread to FB in the redesign. i didn't know about it b/c, as i said, i gave up on the redesign a very long time ago in social media reckoning.

imo, there should be a button on every post to share it to FB, just like there is an add to list, mod alert, reply, multiquote and quick reply button. for example, just in the last 24 hrs i posted the following to FB-

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=82314891&postcount=6721

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=82313243&postcount=6719

ok, need to go to sleep. spent way more time than i should have composing this comment.

@jeffyskate (fake tag, but i assume you are subscribed to this thread and will get notification that there is a new post.)

regarding the app, i recopied this convo that i posted in the redesign article thread b/c this argument involving E_W, a very well-respected veteran of the SD community, probably was directly due to the app view. this was a very serious problem caused by the app not showing the the original first post, just the deal editor's post which was missing vital information. yes, it was due partially b/c of a bad editing job, however, imo, this is a social media site, and everyone aught to see the same info, so when we talk about something we are all on the same page and nobody is at a disadvantage and not even know it.

this is another reason i stick to the classic view, even while mobile. in other views you cannot see attachments, which are usually, but not always pictures. i personally was well-known for my pdf's which i have stopped posting in the last 6 months due changes in social media and inventory checkers coming to the forefront. how i post the info has always evolved and right now trying to figure out the best way w/o giving it away, not getting credit and losing out myself in the process.

It's a very unfortunate limitation if browsing sd via the app...for front page deals, you don't see the op's original post at all, only the mod's write up...which in this case does not include the Mcafee limit.

Unless you click on the "Read More" to expand the OP it does not show the contents.
Also, the title of this thread is now focused on the itunes though it was originally "Weekly...". Any way to change the title back to "Weekly..."? I searched for this thread on my phone in-store yesterday because I needed some info from here but could not find it at all and then realized that the title had changed.
Quote from Elementary_Watson View Post :
Bad job with the title as well seeing as it says nothing about McAfee or paper.
Quote from rastaman32 View Post :
The thread I created still has the original title. When you search "staples weekly ad staples" using google. My thread shows up. However, it automatically defaults to the app view which does not show all of the info I put in there. I don't think there is anything I can do about it? I would have preferred the mods just rip out the 20% off itunes deal and left normal Staples info alone.
Quote from Elementary_Watson View Post :
User error then. Thanks.
while some of the problem was due to a bad deal editing job, some of the problem was that the OP's post could be seen easily by some viewers and not by others. imo, if this is going to be a social media site, we should all be able to see the same thing so we can talk about the same thing, not different things.

First of all I appreciate very much the time you have taken to compose this comment and read with great interest. This is exactly what I'm talking about - I want you to be frank and specific, because it helps me understand the pain points of the app. Let me address the major themes of your post:

"The biggest complaint has been about the whiteness and brightness of the redesign"

- I understand this, and you are correct, our step to address this in the apps was to release a midnight theme in Android (because a ton of folks requested it). We have not done so yet in iOS. In creating midnight theme, we discussed the idea of allowing you to customize the color palette of the app (in settings you could just set the colors yourself). That remains an idea, but honestly given the number of initiatives on the plate for our apps it is unlikely we are going to do it this year. Just being 100% transparent.

We have tackled issues in the apps in a stack order, starting with the foundational ones. You will notice the app is much, much faster and more stable than it was before, and that took a ton of work by our team. That was priority one for us, to get the app to do its essential job well. Now we are starting on the building blocks of the app - things like adding enhanced Search functionality, ability to send/receive PM, ability to have your notifications in a central place, better deal alerts, and a ton of other improvements. These are things we need to do before the cosmetic step, which is super important but - if I'm ordering our initiatives I'd rather give you guys the tools you need first before painting them a color, if you'll pardon me massacring the analogy.

Now the second part about photos gets me really excited and is very much in line with how I think about where our app can go. You are right, mobile is less about a lot of text and more about images. Mobile is about doing things easily, like snapping a photo, and then letting the back-end fill in the rest.

It is very cool to read about how you do this using FB messenger (another thing I'd like our apps to do - message in this style rather than forum style) and Instagram.

So why haven't we done this yet in the apps?

Well, because again we are getting there. We don't have a huge team and have knocked out the heavy lifting (a stable, well-architected core 'under the hood' foundation) so we can now focus on new initiatives. We are still working on what we call 'parity' features - things that exist on the desktop site that don't yet exist in the apps (i.e., ability to sort and filter search, ability to PM, etc.). Once those are established we will finally be able to move to more material changes to the app reflective of the mobile world (photos! barcode scanner! messaging! improved localization/beacons etc. etc.).

Regarding sharing, all deals have default iOS and Android sharing enabled - a tap to share on social just like any other app.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

Thanks for the feedback.

My opinion is that this is a problem of editing between the DA post and the OP. You are asking for the DA post to appear, followed by the OP. The majority of the time, that is redundant information - essentially the same deal repeated twice. If there is vital information missing in the DA post, the DA should have put it there.

Mobile has very limited real estate, therefore we'd rather have you be able to scroll quickly to the comments area than read the same deal details twice. I'm open to suggestions but I would need to better understand your need to have both.

i appreciate your willingness to listen to our pain. it's a refreshing breath of fresh air after what felt like years and years of our complaints falling on deaf ears, dating all the way back to the previous redesign.

as for midnite theme in iOS, imo there is no rush b/c *invert colors* is already built into the devices. why reinvent the wheel? just put in a line for iOS users to go into settings>general>accessibility>invert colors and 2- accessibility>accessibility shortcut>triple-click the home button for>invert colors.

i use the inverted colors shortcut to read ebooks at night. i revert back to regular colors for IG, FB and SD b/c IG does not translate well in reversed colors and anyway, usually after 1-2am social media is rather dead monday thru friday. on the wknds social media is more dead during the day but lotta people on during vampire hours. since i have an ipad and use inverted colors, i would prefer you spend your limited time and resources on functions that don't already exist.

while looking up inverted colors for iOS, i came across this recent article regarding new directions in day to night screen colors on amazon and apple mobile.
http://www.wired.com/2016/01/amaz...en-colors/

as for apps, i don't have a lot of memory on my moto g until i can find a slickdeal on a micro sd card, so i only have a few apps. i have the target cartwheel app so i can scan merchandise and add discounts to my account but i had to delete the target app. i have ig and the layout app on my higher resolution phone to make photo collages to post to ig, however, i have the repost app for ig on my ipad. it works b/c i usually check my ig feed in the morning and at night on my ipad and do the reposts then. i do the reposts more so for my RL friends and family, but i might as well include the lurkers who follow me and there are some slickdealers.

then i have fb messenger and whatsapp for when i am out and about and there is wifi available.

if you are curious, this is my instagram acct. i don't do anything fancy. i would post more but doing the deals myself takes up a lot of time and posting for other people is secondary. a lot of times i just run out of time.
https://www.instagram.com/slowtechsd/

when instagram was not computer-friendly, i used to post using an analytics site, but instagram has become much more computer friendly recently and no need to use a work-around-
http://iconosquare.com/slowtechsd

btw, just a little background, i'm not very tech savvy but i can become proficient w/ a little help. when i first came to sd my bff ran a small online store for a large multinational corporation. her store ended up being 2 front page slickdeals because of glitches. i'd have to go into the archives, if they still exist, to see exactly what the deals were. she is now the social media director of a startup college, so we spent a lot of time discussing online marketing, online retail and sales and now social media, what works, what does not, it's direction and it's future.

Yes, was trying to attach a picture in the app. Couldnt figure that out. Then I tried to go back to edit the comment out and couldnt. I dont use the app all that much. Does it really suck that badly or am I just an idiot and cant figure it out?

By the time I was back at a computer I forgot to go back and edit the original comment.

Thanks for checking back. Tried to do full site on phone too but that kept looping back to the mobile friendly site when I would try to post. I gave the shortened version above. This weekend was NOT a good weekend for me and devices (Windows 10 force loaded on my computer, tried to do the eBay deal and something is screwy with my eBay and/ or PayPal now). I finally gave up yesterday afternoon and just decided I was done for the weekend with tech. Well, except for TV. Wink

So far devices have been gentle with me this morning.

Ok, so I have tried and tried to figure out how to share this picture from my phone. Per Nuff's suggestion I am in the browser on the "full site" mode. When I tap the paper clip I get nothing. Can't seem to copy directly from my photos so that doesn't work. I am iOS. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong.

I would love to share as I think it came out very nicely. Seems silly that sharing a photo is so problematic. Other forums allow that just from the app. Kinda seems like SD dropped the ball on this unless I am missing something.

ETA Thought I would give it a try In edit mode and the paper lip worked that time! Since I wasn't really expecting it to work it is at the beginning of the post. Not gonna risk screwing it up by trying to move it.

EATA And of course it is sideways! Sheesh!!!

another convo about the app in the last several days-

If you're on the app, I don't think you can subscribe to threads yet without posting. That's why you see more of those old school "5char" posts now. I've pointed out the problem in my app rating review, and they said they're working on a fix, but until then, you might have to go to the mobile or desktop site to subscribe.

so funny people in the staples weekly ad thread got their pantywaists in a knot when i used *follow* to subscribe to a thread which is what you do on facebook to get notifications about a certain thread. b/c it seems that's exactly what you have to do if you are using the app. shows just how many people actually use the app cuz not a lot of people do so. when i'm out and about i go thru my browser b/c there are just too many functions that are missing when you are used to the full site version. i've been told that many members nowadays are lurkers b/c using the site thru mobile devices is too difficult.

You have the option to not subscribe when you post. Which is/was the default. Not sure if that applies to mobile or not.

That's an option on the mobile and desktop site, but not on the app.

That's why I still primarily use the basic HTML mobile version, even on desktop, because it has the best combination of features and readability I'm looking for.

Cool, thanks for sharing.

We have the integration of 'Subscribed' with the 'Saved' functionality on the app, so the app would integrate all subscribed lists with whatever you favorite (star icon on every thread) in the app. If you wanted to save/favorite a thread in the app, you would have the option to subscribe as well (the difference between the two being notifications).

Currently in the app, you only have the ability to favorite a thread, which places it on the Favorites list in the More menu. Would you like the feature I describe above, that integrates the ability to save/favorite a thread with the ability to be notified when there is activity on it (subscribe), as well as the ability for the app to display threads subscribed to on desktop in this same 'Saved' list on mobile? Let me know as this is on our roadmap but curious how you would want the feature to work in the apps.

let me try to bring in people to the convo who do sd on mobile. currently i have a moto g 1st gen, wifi, no data plan, and there is so little memory b/c facebook eats up so much. i have less than 10 downloaded apps, have contemplated deleting facebook and going thru the browser but don't know if the messenger app will work w/o facebook which i do use a lot. i've disabled a majority of the google apps the phone came w/. i want to get a new phone but not sure when that will happen. but maybe sooner rather than later.

if you don't mind, could you comment about the below post since i know you 2 use your smartphone often to access slickdeals? i don't have enough memory to use more than the absolute necessary apps on my phone, so i have to go thru the browser.

if you use the basic html site over the app could you explain why?

Sounds good slowtech and much appreciated bringing others into the fray. Ironically I've thought of deleting Facebook as well, just haven't been able to rip off the bandaid and stop learning what my friends from high school are doing everyday.

Yes I'd love to get a good conversation going regarding the things you would like to see in the app, as longtime Slickdeals users, hopefully in some kind of rank - 10 for must have down to 1 for nice to have, something like that, especially for those of you that have tried the 'new' app or yes, if you still use the basic html. I am already aware of a significant portion of the feedback but would love to hear more, and also really like to know not just what you want but why you want it, how it helps or hurts your experience, etc.

I never even seen the thread for the sd app feedback and was pointed out to post here, so here it goes...

I have always used desktop version, while working and checking updates, but then mobile app while on the road and home, which happens often. Recently I updated the app and have some things that don't quiet make me happy:

First off the threads that I am subscribed too have always been showing up as bold in the prior version if there were new posts on there that I haven't read, now they don't. Also, If I would read the posts on the mobile app, and then go on to computer in the old version it would track somehow that I have read that particular thread but now when I go back to the desktop I see lots of new posts in my threads but they are basically the ones I read on mobile app, but just not tracking that I have already seen or read them. I am logged in on both mobile app and desktop.

Second big issue I have is when I open a thread to read, there is no option to go to the last page right away, I have to scroll down through lots of stuff to reach the page numbers in order to click on the last page and then be where I need to be... When the thread has huge wiki in it, the page numbers are almost all the way down to the bottom of the first page... and I have to wait for it to load it all or the app just shuts down if I try to go really quick to the bottom.

Third and most annoying is I can't seem to ever read Target thread... No matter what I tried, when I click on it, there is a huge wiki in there, I wait for it to load all the way, but when I click any page number, not just last page but like page 2, or 10, just doesn't matter which one, it just shuts down the app... Not even once I have been successful opening it to read on mobile app since the update ...

Hi Journeyman - When you updated the app, did you update from the older design to the new design? Want to make sure that is the case, if you could let me know.

We will address point 2 (last post), likely in our next release.

For subscribed threads, we will look into how to improve that experience for you.

For the huge wiki thread, you are right that the sheer size of the wiki is likely crashing the app. We'll investigate and correct that issue.

I'd love to know additional feedback if/when you have the time: in addition to what you've identified above, what - as a long time Slickdealer - are the things you would like to be able to do in the new app that you cannot do now?
