i had posted the emirates fares from JFK to Milan at 610 RT a couple of days back. if they are still available, that's a pretty good price. Milan is close to Rome and also a hub for easyjet for cheap flights out

Well, Milan is actually closer to Munich than it is to Rome... Italy's a pretty "long" country and Milan in is the far north, less than an hour from the Swiss border.

Still it's not a bad spot to hop over to any of the 3 cities the OP mentions with a cheap flight- or even a train ride, depending on timing and cost.

As to which city to head to- really depends on the ages of the kids and everyone's interests...

Check for Aer Lingus deals regularly. They typically release good prices for flights to Europe in the next few weeks. Their flights typically route through Dublin. They were lowest price for us to Paris one summer, and lowest for an open jaw into Rome and out of Venice.

Your family might be more comfortable staying in a home, European hotels can be quite cramped for a family of five.

I just started using airbnb and prefer it to vrbo.
Ireland is closest and family friendly. I went w/12 family members in '07. There are frequent flight, car & lodging packages for a week for $999x4 people. I saw one posted to travelzoo in January for this summer and August were the best rates.
Not sure where youre flying out of but WOW has some crazy cheap deals with a stopover in Iceland, if you want. Baggage is $$$ tho. I think SAS offers cheap deals also, but you may need to get to the cities they fly from.
PM me if you want details.

Does Aer Lingus offer stopovers? My daughter wants to see Ireland on a backpacking trip then go to Europe for several weeks. Should you get to Boston, NYC or ORD?
