Need Help with ddwrt - Not able to create a guest network

cookiemonster 2,116 795 February 29, 2016 at 02:41 PM
I'm running DD-WRT v3.0-r29155M kongac (02/25/16) on a Netgear R8000. I wanted to create a guest network. There are various guides, which are actually the same as ddwrt.com's wiki on the matter.

So first, you have to create a virtual network. Wireless -> Basic Settings -> Virtual Interfaces. Unbridge, AP Isolate, etc. My 2.4GHz radio is wl1, so I create wl1.1. As soon as I save & apply the settings, I can no longer see any wireless networks on my computer, including the 2 x 5GHz networks. The only way to fix it is to connect to the router via ethernet, delete wl1.1, apply & reboot. Only then do my networks come back.

What do you guys think is going on?

Any particular reason you're running DD-WRT? The stock firmware on my R7000 has been rock solid and supports guest networks without a problem.

Here's some more information. My laptop doesn't have 5GHz, only 2.4, but my phone is dual band.

As stated previously, the router has 3 radios: wl0 is 5GHz, wl1 is 2.4, and wl2 is the 2nd 5GHz. If I create wl1.1, wl0 (the main 2.4GHz signal) won't work any more; neither my laptop nor my phone will connect. If I instead make the virtual on one of the 5GHz radios (i.e., wl0.1 or wl2.1), wl1 works fine, and my phone can connect to the new guest network (wl0.1 or wl2.1).

I'm not sure it makes a difference, but when creating the virtual interface, as soon as I hit Apply, wl1 dies. When I remove wl1.1, I have to reboot the router for wl1 to come back online.

What do all the abbreviations (YMMV, PM, B&M etc) stand for?

AP isolation
or create one more VLAN, bridge 2.4g to it

then verify if it works

Once I create the guest network, as soon as I click submit, the 2.4 network disappears. I get no chance to do anything. BTW, I still can't even see the guest network until I reboot the router. At that point, I can see both 2.4 networks, but can't connect to either of them from any device.

After deleting the virtual network & rebooting, I can connect to the 2.4 network again.

Don't try to configure anything wireless on your router while you are connected to it via wireless. Plug a system into an Ethernet port and THEN do the configuration from the wired device. It's possible that the configuration won't work until all of the steps are completed but you lose wireless connectivity during the process. Being hardwired will let you do all the steps.

I can't offer much specific help with ddwrt, as I use Shibby Tomato on my ASUS router. Frown

I've actually tried that. Then I noticed that I don't lose connection over 5G with my phone, so I can actually do the entire process wirelessly with my phone and still have the same result Frown .

I'm shooting from the hip and in the dark here but I have been in a similar situation where the recommended power supply was getting old and it could not supply the correct voltage and or amperage. DDWRT allows for tweaking the power settings and these may even change without your knowledge.

It took me days for me to figure out that if I replaced that power supply all my problems went away, but here's the kicker the problem happened while I was installing the DDWRT firmware Mad The install was corrupted. Obviously I can't tell you that what happened to me is now happening to you but maybe you can check that power supply. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Well, well, well! So I finally got it working.

It turns out that the problem only happens if I create the guest network with no wireless security! If I add the virtual interface & save, then go to wireless security and set a password & save, when I then apply the changes it works as expected.

Phew! Finally got it all set up, with Privoxy & DNS-O-Matic working, as well.

Thanks for the all the suggestions, guys.
