I'm sure that Karl and his acolytes both on and in SD won't be happy to hear about this, but there's a new competitor in the race to give away as much free cell connectivity as possible.

This one is called Smartmark. It re-starts up in about a month after finishing a move from the snowy climes of PA to the also snowy this year climes of VA, and plans to continue giving away unlimited talk, text, and 5Gb data each and every month on the AT&T network.

The process is BYOD where you put their SIM in any unlocked GSM phone. The way it works is that you pay a one-time $100 enrollment fee (price is dealer dependent, so sure to drop as more dealers get involved) and download an app that asks you up to seven questions each day, like "How often do you get a haircut".

Unlike Swagbucks, everyone is automatically qualified to participate, whether you fit into a particular demographic or not. Unlike Swagbucks, where a survey that could take up to 15 minutes might earn you $2 at most - and possibly less, each survey of seven or less multiple choice questions gets you cell service on the AT&T network for the day with up to 5Gb of data for the month,

With the recent enrollment fee of $40 to $50 recently put in place at RIngplus which gets you a promise that someone might answer the phone when you call with questions - at least for now, I think its time to consider alternatives.

I am not a representative of this company, nor do I much care whether this specific firm or any other is successful in bringing much needed reform to the cellular communications industry. I do believe, however, that we're on the cusp of some major changes in the way that industry is organized and I look forward to learning and experiencing more of those changes as they evolve.

It's always good to have more options and just maybe we'll start getting the kind of service we should have been getting long ago as a result.. I look forward to reading your thoughts.

This might be official Smart Mark or put together by a reseller.

(Other) FAQs and info

Q: Do I need to answer the survey questions at the beginning of each day before I can use my phone?

A: No, you can answer the questions at any time during the day, or even wait until the next day, although making that a habit could jeopardize your service

Q: Is tethering supported?

A: No, but to set up unlocked GSM phones to tether is easy and so far no one has been disqualified for doing it.

Q: Do I have to have the SIM and the app installed by someone or can I do it myself?

A: You can do it yourself - https://www.smartmarkphones.net/g...d-go-kits/

Interesting. Does the service shut off every morning you wake up till you complete the survey?

It's nice to have alternatives, but the $100 and DAILY survey are a turn-off. Monthly or weekly surveys would have been fine.

interesting concept but this changes the way I use my cell phone. at least RingPlus worked just like a regular phone. only difference is the ringback tone

and I'm not a fan of giving out personal data. even if I answer questions at random

I'll keep my plan that I topped up with for $5 and have never gone over the limits. People who need 5 GBs of data have five phones and just switch when they get close to 1GB.

$100 is a little steep to front a no name company. ill wait until they lower enrollment cost and offer online activation.
times like these makes me glad i have a nexus

Great question actually.

My experience has been that you have a few days before you get a notification of your service being in jeopardy, so answering anytime during the day will work fine.

The other side of that same question, is that if you go out of the country for vacation you'll need to respond to the questions using WiFi or leave your phone with someone that will answer them for you.

so what happens if you forget to answer questions while you are out on vacations? does your service get cancelled? can you reactivate the service later by answering the questions again?
