As I search for used games, I find this in the description a lot: "From a smoke free home". Is there any real reason for this as a selling point or is it a carry over from the cartridge days when soot and filth could be caught inside the cartridge.

Just curious as I couldn't come up with an answer outside of making a judgement that smokers wouldn't keep the disk in good condition.

Thanks for the opinions.

It's pretty common when selling anything as used. I'm guessing because the smell for some items permeates well after the sale? Not sure.

As well as paper inserts and booklets, etc. I'd prefer anything I buy be completely smoke-free.

smoke can damage the case, manual, and even disc (particulates building up similar to dust/dirt). Also, smelly.

Completely agree that it would make a game case smell badly. Not sure I wouldn't buy one because of it though...

I see it more as an issue for electronics. You can tell if something came form smoker's home. There is 1000x more dust inside the devices, clogging important parts and restricting air flow. As for Discs, I don't see it as an issue. You can wipe it off.

I bought a Nintendo Wii off CL from a non-smoke free home and regretted it. Took awhile to clean it off plus the accessories. Never again will I buy from a smoker.

I am not sure how it will effect the disk. Maybe a little dirty, but clean it off and it will be like new. Sure, they could stain the top and make it look nasty, but then is noticeable upon arrival. Most of the time the cases and disks look new.

Bought a few stinky console before, just seal in a bag with some dryer sheets and it will go away in a few days.

Because that smoke smell never truly comes out of some portions of games. This is especially true with the artworks and manuals on newer games and the entire case/box with older gen games that came in cardboard boxes.

Another 'scent' that never seems to come out of such items is kitty litter. You own a cat and that stink gets on EVERYTHING. You may not smell it because you're used to it(like the smoke smell w/ smokers), but for someone who doesn't own a cat or smoke that smell is unmistakable.

The worst smell I've ever smelled though? That would have to be when somebody who smoked traded in a game to a local shop and they hit the whole thing(even the disc) with fcuking Febreze. As if trying to mask the stench of cig smoke with something even smellier is going to really work. You could smell the damn thing from 5 feet away.

He lives near me. A couple years ago, he bought five copies of a game on clearance at target closest to me. Bragged about it here then soon found out the trade value wasn't worth a 'flip'. When I called him on it for being a scumbag for buying out the stock, he PM'ed me and told me he would now purposely return them to a target far away from me so I can't get a copy for myself.
Whine more, please.

Uncooked rice in a storage bin may help like it does to suck moisture out of phones that have been dropped in water. But I've tried the dryer sheet thing before. All it does it make the item smell like those then.

Best thing to do with a console to try eliminating at least some of the stink is to clean it thoroughly inside and out with a clean cloth with an unscented type of cleaner. Get that smokers grime off of it and the rest of the smell should dissipate to where it's barely noticeable.

i just remembered something funny. on myth busters, I'm not sure if they aired this segment. but adam was in a car and they tossed it in the river or something to see if he could escape. turns out they had gotten the car from a smoker. they didn't think anything of it, when the car was in the water the nicotine or whatever came out of the cloth. he had opened his eyes and whatever it was in the cloth burned his eyes. he couldn't see and couldn't find his emergency air. i think this is the video for it.
