Thinkpad T420 SSD seems slow

house kitten 6,899 March 10, 2016 at 11:17 AM
I bought a used in great condition T420. I swapped out the 320 HDD for a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD. These are my readings on read and write SR - 318, RR - 56845, SW - 516, RW - 59782 with the new Samsung. I used Samsung magician software and all look good, drive is healthy, optimized and ready to go. Now for the problem: When using firefox I find that for some reason nothing moves and it seems very slow at times. Now I have a fan noise that is driving me nuts and am wondering if the problems are connected. The computer is idle right now and CPU is 62C and fan is at 4481 RPM. Is that OK? If it is ok the noise from this thing is driving me nuts as it seems to be quiet and then seems to take off at very high rate.

Any suggestions on what I can try to speed up SSD? Could the fan running hot have anything to do with it?

Should mention the laptop is currently docked and those familiar with lenovo series 3 know the docking station covers the fan vent. I did undock it and am getting the same issues.

make sure it's not in power save mode.

try to change fan mode to active instead of passive.

see which app using too much CPU...

what's the room temperature

Room temp around 67. How do I change fan mode to active, not seeing an option. Power save mode?

usually laptops have a factory tool to control power, if can't find it in system tray, search power options in start menu

T420s are notorious for noisy fans - you can look into TPFanControl to tame the fan noise. Beware though - these fans are also pretty terrible on them and will likely die out at some point.

As for the lousy performance, have you tried a different browser? Which OS is installed? Fresh install? Too many unanswered questions and I doubt the SSD is causing your troubles. Did you check Task Manager to see if any process has gone crazy?

This is a T420 not the s. I also have 3 other t420 and one x220 at home (kids, DH, etc). None have a fan noise like this. They are also vintage 2011-2012 and nothing has died.

Yes it was a fresh install of Win 7 pro. Using Kaspersky as anti virus. Task manager shows firefox using more resources than I would expect but I usually have 15-20 tabs open. Lenovo says the heat sink needs some thermal grease and yes I am using TP FanControl.

So the readings I posted for Samsung SSD are in line?
