Thread Details

Seems like MS is finally caving in on this one. Though it seems it's up to the devs to support it in their own game. Could make for some interesting rivalries. Also, I wonder how you would tell who you're playing against(from which system).

It seems the console guys would get crushed in certain games where mouse and keyboard would dominate.

I would think so. One of the articles I read almost made it sound like it would be a choice for the player too if they wanted to get matchmade with everyone or just Xbox, so that would be nice in certain scenarios(especially FPS).

Rocket League would be a nice combined pool I could get behind.

It does. But I think Devs would be smart enough to know that and in the "Spirit of a competitive game" that they wouldn't allow cross platforms (or make it optional). Just like how you have tweeks to games to make the guns fairer, you know?

It makes sense in gaming now...and I actually like this MORE because what this is going to mean is that the service you pay for is going to have to get better as it is opening up the competition. The $40 a year won't be to just play online, but the monthly free games and cloud based save servers and other features like that will come to the forefront as you no longer have to think about what console you need to buy to play with your friends. The key attributes now are going to be exclusives and what extras do you get.

I couldn't read Skeeza's article, but in the one I read it said that game would be the first one they were starting with.

Cross-compatibility with PS4 sounds awesome. Not so much with PC for the reasons already expressed in this thread.

I played a game called Shadowrun on Xbox 360 that had this feature. They "balanced" the game so PC users wouldn't have an advantage. It didn't work well.

Unreal Tournament had something like this. They turned off Aim Assist for PC players to make it a more level playing field. It did not work, PC still destroyed everything.

I only see this for racing games or fighting games. No FPS game will be remotely fair on a console vs PC playing field.

It also opens up matches to lots of cheats that the PC can implement.

Meh. Online gaming is dead to me after Sony joined MS in putting up a paywall on the PS4. IF I game after finally 'moving on' from the PS3 it'll be as part of the "PC master race" due to no paywall(as of now) to get online aside from paying for your monthly internet access.

He lives near me. A couple years ago, he bought five copies of a game on clearance at target closest to me. Bragged about it here then soon found out the trade value wasn't worth a 'flip'. When I called him on it for being a scumbag for buying out the stock, he PM'ed me and told me he would now purposely return them to a target far away from me so I can't get a copy for myself.
Whine more, please.

Yep, I played that game a lot too, by the end though they started to kill the compatibility because they thought they were losing cash on it (PC people didn't have the paywall).

But Sony just put out a release saying they have done this since 2002 (PS2 + PC in a FF game), well, that doesn't count if you are also taking steps backwards from it, haha.

Sony said in a statement to GameSpot. "We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play." So is that basically a "Yes" to PC and a "No" to Xbox? [I mean, if it was a Yes to both, they would have just said that]

last gen Sony ask this same thing to Microsoft and they said no and now Sony is saying no. Ether way it's benefit to gamers and games have longer multiplayer life.

To be honest I'd rather companies put in a full single player mode rather than multiplayer since online gamers(in general) are asshats.

I typically run into either:

*Super serious players

OR

*Squeakers(aka younger kids whose parents got them the game(s) they're playing and who scream or are otherwise annoying while playing

Of course I've also run into dudebros galore and homies who speak in 'ghetto' over their mics. All are really quite annoying and why I rarely use my headset(s) anymore.

Think both companies should want to do it. If you have an xbox for example and some of your friends are playing a game on ps4 you might be enticed to buy the game with them being connected online and that would lead to more software and maybe even more online subscription sales for both systems

Id rather play online with people - its boring on your own.. i still have a lot of games like fallout 4 sealed because its lonely play.

I don't understand the losers who play elders scrolls for days on their own.
