Are incremental console.5's the future?

Quote :
We don’t know whether current PS4 owners will be able to upgrade or if they’ll have to buy an entirely new device to benefit from this power boost, but from what we hear, Sony has started briefing developers.

A more powerful PS4 would also allow the machine to be more competitive with PCs in the world of virtual reality. With a higher-end GPU, the PS4 could more easily match up against the more expensive Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headsets, which are designed to work with powerful PCs.
ku - Sources: Sony Is Working On A 'PlayStation 4.5' [t;kotaku.com]

I wasn't impressed with any of PSVR's games during the media blowout during GDC this week (on rails, ugly, tech demos)... so a GPU upgrade is in dire need for PS4's VR. Of course a GPU upgrade would not only be used for VR, 4K (aka 2160p) renders 4 times the pixels of 1080p games. Or if developers don't see a lot of 4K TV adoption, last I heard is TV sales are on a downward curve (1080p is plenty for me), then they can use that extra GPU power to make 1080p games 60fps (resolution and framerate would be the only differences I would hope/expect between PS4 vs PS4.5 for non-VR games).

Sounds like the cat is out of the bag for Sony and Microsoft. I expect both to announce the PS4.5 and Xbox One.5 at E3 this year or else hardware sales will stagnate as gamers will wait-and-see now that these incremental console upgrade rumors are not stopping. This could hurt Nintendo's NX hardware, rumored for a 2016 launch, as Nintendo has been skimping out on hardware specs in favor of gimmicks and the gap will only widen if this is all true.

Update 1:
The WSJ is now reporting about this rumor whom don't report on gaming rumors unless they know it's for certain.

Quote :
Updated console would be announced before virtual-reality headset

The days of waiting six or more years between videogame-console releases are coming to an end.

Sony Corp. is planning to sell a more powerful version of its PlayStation 4 machine to handle higher-end game experiences, including virtual reality, people familiar with the matter said, while continuing production of its existing console
Wall Street Journal - Sony Plans New PlayStation for Graphics-Heavy Games [wsj.com] (paywall link)

Update 2:
NeoGAF forum member, OsirisBlack, posted a mod-approved leak about the PS4.5/PS4K.

Quote :
Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.

It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.

Also there was talk of some sort of VR lounge for the media player app which is supposed to be getting a substantial upgrade.

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."

For the PSVR

Eve Valkyrie
Robinson
GT Sport

For the PS4K

Deep Down (Thought this was dead)
GOW4 (This was the exact abbreviation on the sheet I can only assume its god of war 4)
NeoGAF - PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017) [neogaf.com]

Update 3:
All games released in October and beyond will be required to have a NEO mode (games before that will need patches for NEO mode performance increase).
Quote :
Throughout the documents, Sony repeatedly reminds developers that the frame rate of games in NEO Mode must meet or exceed the frame rate of the game on the original PS4 system.
All this for $400.

If true, then this is even MORE reason for me to stop gaming after I'm done with the PS3/360/Wii gen. Right now I have a triple digit physical backlog of games and at least a double digit digital backlog.

Why buy a new console when they're going to 'upgrade' it and likely start developing ONLY for the 'new new' console they release a few years later?

He lives near me. A couple years ago, he bought five copies of a game on clearance at target closest to me. Bragged about it here then soon found out the trade value wasn't worth a 'flip'. When I called him on it for being a scumbag for buying out the stock, he PM'ed me and told me he would now purposely return them to a target far away from me so I can't get a copy for myself.
Whine more, please.

Sony and Microsoft can always enforce a policy that all games released on the .5 consoles must have a regular version that runs at least 720p/30fps.

True. But now I'm even more glad I haven't 'upgraded' yet. Not that I'm going to run out and buy a 4k TV just to use with a console(or ever really). But I think I'm done with getting consoles until it seems like they're done tweaking the specs and models.

If it's just an add on for 4K then fine even if it's like the new 3ds it's nothing to worry about.

Honestly, if this rumor had come out in January, it might have swayed me towards getting a 4K TV instead of the 1080P I got (since gaming is probably 80% of my TV usage).

With a big takeaway from CES being the release of UHD BD players this year, I figured this was coming in the 2018-19 time frame, but maybe they're considering pulling it ahead a year or two because they think 4k early adoption is happening faster than anticipated? Being that sammy has the only "affordable" uhd disc player out right now, I'd imagine Sony would release an expensive standalone before launching a new console with the new optical drive as they have in the past with DVD and BR.

You are confused. All they are going to do is release a ps4 that is HDCP 2.2 able and can play 4k blurays. The GPU isn't going to be different and all the models will play the exact same games.
Updating to HDCP 2.2 is cheap and same goes for changing out the drive to 4k bluray. Most people don't know this but 25 dollar disc drives made in the past year can read 4k bluray. They just lack the software to play the movie.

4k GPU is pricey as fark still.. If it does play 4k games I assure you its going to be some type of up scaling trick BULLSHIT

Consoles can have a ~60% weaker GPU than a PC counterpart while still achieving the same results of the latter (Sony slide from GDC [abload.de]).

Since multiple developers told Kotaku about a PS4.5 Sony briefing, this is going to happen.

Just another reason for Sony to push the PS4.5: Sony sells TV's. Sony's gaming sector is one of the only profitable departments it has so they could try another 3DTV pitch for 4KTV's (remember Uncharted 3 was Sony's 3D flagship game for 3DTV's). Plus, a topbox (primary device connected to any 4KTV) will have the supreme advantage of selling all 4K movies/shows with digital royalties (if 4K takes off).

That slide is trash.. Like I said it will be a ps4 with updated HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 and be able to play 4k blurays. But this GPU will stay the same or be some energy efficient revised version.

Since the ps4 now support 4k output yes devs can make 4k games. But that doesn't mean anything. You can make pong and tetris in 4k. But who gives a fark..

Not only that they are of course going to use tons of trickery to get some games to 4k. Dyanmic resolution and upscaling. All types of bullshit afoot with a ps4 doing 4k. It will be NOTHING like pure 4k on a PC.

At this point I can't see myself buying any non-gaming product manufactured by Sony.

yeah his interpretation is wrong, from a mathematical standpoint.

the graphic is saying you can get 60% more power from a GPU in a console. not that you need a gpu rated at 40% that of a pc - gpu.
