The Fire 7" is trivial to root, block the lock screen ads, install the Google Play Store and any app you want (including a regular launcher): http://forum.xda-developers.com/a...t-t3272695

Bricked / Won't Display Charge Icon / Won't Turn On --- Read Below

I've placed custom Roms on mine back during Christmas and set them aside after doing so. Earlier in the week I found one of them unresponsive and appeared to not be charging and wouldn't turn on.

After trying to charge it for two days, I finally tried to open it up in hopes of being able to unplug the battery. You can. It worked and saved what I thought was a bricked device at this point. I took my thumb nail and pried at the top and went around the seam like a can opener until it just popped off; it didn't take any force to remove the back cover.

From here you can see the lithium polymer battery, it's glued in, don't attempt to remove the battery. Instead, remove the white connector coming from the battery, it just lifts straight up; it doesn't slide or push in, just lift it out. As soon as I plugged it back up I was able to boot and show that it did charge, as it was 96% full.

These "entry level" devices now appear to be ridiculously easy to reset and maintain with new batteries in the future. Great devices for the kids to destroy without denting your wallet; it's what mine are for. Now that there's workarounds to save APKs to the flash storage, these can finally be used to a fuller extent. Sling these around a headrest loaded with movies for a road trip. Bluetooth a controller in for emulated or Android games.

depends on your needs. these work just fine for my kids. I'm not out a bunch of money on something that'll get roughed up a bit by the kids. if you can link something for $30 with same specs, I'd definitely consider it.
As a public school teacher, this is perfect for me. You would not believe how useful a class set of even the crappiest of Android tablets are. For 800 of my own money , i could get a single District approved laptop or 27 of these. Stick CM on them, lock them down, create locked down accounts, and push desired apps to them. Then you can use them to control robots, gather data for lab experiments, do research, program with PocketCode, practice with fun games like Kahoot, do Khan Academy, create videos, record interviews, and more. Simply transformative.
Got 3 of these, installed SlimRom and CM. Works GREAT for media, communication use.

About gaming, I can play The Room 3 normally no lag.

Edit: BTW, TU and bought another one just in case any family member wants to play with.
