How to Install Lollipop 5.12 on Sprint LG Volt for RingPlus

sunfish 55 17 March 21, 2016 at 12:29 PM
I bought a Sprint LG Volt phone last Fall and had it activated on RingPlus. I have a lot of problems with the stock Jellybean 4.4.2. I didn't use the phone much but I noticed that these apps crashed consistently:

Citi Mobile - crashed after taking the front image
Waze - crashed a few minutes into navigation
Delta Airlines - could not check in

There are probably countless other apps that don't play well. For me, the solution is to upgrade to a beta CM12.1 rom. Here is how, with the usual buyer beware disclaimer:

0. Backup user's data if necessary

1. Root the LG Volt by following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/a...st59309508

2. Download these:
CM12.1 rom: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?...4347819551
TWRP recovery: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?...4347771339
Gapps: http://opengapps.org/ (ARM 5.1, I'll go with micro or nano)

3. Install Flashify, then use it to install the TWRP recovery. Reboot to recovery

4. Wipe system. data, dalvik cache, and cache

5. Install CM12.1 rom, then normal reboot

6. Go to Settings->About Phone and press the build number 7 times to enable developer options

7. Go to developer options and enable advanced reboot

8. In Settings->Display & Lights, disable "Lift to Wake" (otherwise the phone will keep waking up)

9. Reboot to recovery again (long hold power button)

10. Wipe dalvik cache and cache

11. Install Gapps, then normal reboot

12. Go to Settings->Mobile Network->Access Point Name (APN)

13. Add these 2 APNs to enable 3G and LTE on Sprint:
Sprint eHRPD
n.r5.ispsn

14. Reboot phone, you should see LTE connection now.

15. Restore user's data if necessary

Cool! Thanks.

Regarding the Citi Mobil app: just clear your memory and kill background apps before using it. Works 9 out of 10 times if you do.

Questions:
Will this work on LG Volt white (Virgin Mobile)?
What will happen if I do "factory reset" AFTER upgraded to Lollipop 5.12?

Yeah, I don't use the apps in question, but I have bigger webpages crash Chrome if I don't clear the RAM first.

Nice to know that Lollipop can alleviate that, but I'll probably just stick with what I have. Works great otherwise, and I've got it all tweaked like I want it.

Thanks to the OP for sharing, though!

More downloads here: Seems like latest ROM is 12/12 vs OPs 9/19

https://www.androidfilehost.com/?...t_dir=DESC

Q: Original Root used TWRP 2.8.1 do we have to use 2.8.7 for this?

The Android Forums thread reports that the Dec ROM has issues and bootloops. Better stick with earlier Sept build. CM roms aren't exactly well tested as OEM factory ROMs.

I'd like the same answer as I'm using both the white (Virgin) and black (Sprint) LG Volt's for my boys.

As for the factory reset, it will resort back to the stock ROM that came out of the box.

As long as you flash the correct APN fix after ROM for your CURRENT carrier, it should work. Factory reset after flashing this custom ROM only reverts to clean state of custom ROM, not factory ROM anymore. To go back, there are threads on AndroidForums.com to flash a stock rom back, it's more involved than simple factory reset.

Btw, none of Ringplus APN fix zip files I found work since they all have more than 2 APN entries.

Please note, neither android version 5.12 nor 5.1.2 exist. The latest version of Lollipop is 5.1.1
