Asus RT-N56U is a decent router if you put Padavan firmware on it.

Just remember the internal antenna limits the wifi range if you need strong/long signal.

I doubt there is a better $20 gigabit router around yet.

I've been using the 56U for over 3 years now. Stock firmware and it is excellent. They moved to Asus-WRT a while ago and the features are just awesome compared to most other routers. The range is not at all limited. I have it in the basement and it reaches the top floor with 5/5 on mobile devices (2.4Ghz) 4/5 bars (5Ghz). Ethernet is very fast and supports tons of simultaneous sessions. Def a buy under $50.

Is the N56U a good budget option if I'm looking at setting up NAS? I'd love to set one up using a RT-AC68U, but for only $20 I'm willing to sacrifice some speed for a good deal. I'm still rocking a WRT54G with DD-WRT, and while I know it's not fast, it's reliable as rain.

I bought it for the same price a couple of months ago and I'm debating buying another one. Not sure why, it's just a great price on a good wireless router Stick Out Tongue

I have a 1TB portable hard drive attached to one of the USB ports. My use is pretty limited; I only stream HD content to my Nexus Player and Fire TV Stick (both using Kodi), but it seems to be good enough. Not sure what you're looking to do with it, though.

Thanks OP, got N56U. I have amazing experience with Asus routers so far, my RT-N16U I bought 5 or so years ago still works perfectly at my parents' place. I use simple rt-n10p with custom firmware (I don't even remember which one as it is so stable and I don't need to log into it at all) I bought for like $10 or so on another deal a year ago and can't be happier. Let's see if N56U adds anything beyond what I already get with rt-n10p.

Asus RT-N56U: "Limit one rebate per product per household". I plan to swap our reliable RT-N12 for this Asus RT-N56U and use the RT-N12 in WIFI repeater mode.

Does RT-N56U support repeater function?
I have a RT-N65U and was thinking of setting this up as bridge/repeater. Anyone know if it would work?
Thanks

It supports both bridge and repeater. I just sold this on Craigslist and that is what he was looking to do with it.
