Amazon - CD's Manufactured "On Demand" - anyone have experience with these?

Crew 569 434 March 22, 2016 at 09:46 AM
I ordered a hard-to-find CD (Christopher Drake - The Dark Knight Returns) from Amazon, as the only available physical option was sold by them.

It's listed with this; "CD-R Note: This product is manufactured on demand when ordered from Amazon.com."

The information tab associated says that it will look and sound just like a true CD recording, with artwork, but is manufactured on demand using the same original sources as a typical disc.

Anyone have any experience with these? I've heard peppered results, but I really want this soundtrack on a physical medium, and it will arrive tomorrow. Just wanted to see if anyone has used the service before.

A CD-R has a shorter lifespan than your typical commercial music cd or dvd. Rip a high quality copy to your computer. You could have just bought the mp3s and burned the cd yourself.

I haven't used this service myself.

So, why are you postulating? Confused

I asked if anyone has used the service and received a product, so they could shed light on quality and finish of an actual example.

We all know that burned discs have a shorter lifespan, but this is specifically advertised as "manufactured" on demand.

If you want it I would say buy it. Amazon has a good return policy generally if your unhappy.

Yep. In doing some research, they used to not cover these under their return policy, but now do.

It should arrive today, so I will try to shed as much light as possible, and I'll include photos.

For anyone interested, I am actually very happy with the quality of the CD I received.

I feared the artwork would be pixelated, but it's actually very sharp; especially the insert. The discs are clean, with only a hint of the typical green/blue tint (hard to photograph).

The audio fidelity is actually remarkable, IMO. I immediately ripped the discs to FLAC, loaded them onto my Fiio X3, and listened through my Audio Technica M50x's. I don't claim to be an audiophile, but I was legitimately blown away with how great they sounded, compared to the streaming version on my phone (same headphones). Nice, rolling low note to start the first disc, and I was hooked.

All in all, I wouldn't hesitate buying this again. I am very, very pleased with the quality.

Having trouble uploading pics. I'll try again later.
