What do you want out of the machine?

Lenovo still makes the T400 line, and they're still solid workhorses, but the T450s/T460s have moved down to lower power processors. They won't be much of an upgrade in terms of processing power from the T430s, but they''ll be ligher and cooler.

If I buy a T430s i5 for my 10th grader, will it take care of her for 6 yrs (college)?

No gaming - nothing fancy

Probably not. Six years is a very long time for any computer hardware to survive.

Yeah, six years is a lot. The T430s is already a few generations old, and six years is a lot to ask from any laptop, even Lenovo's business class.

It's still an alright laptop at the moment. As I mentioned, the CPU performance is going to be similar to a modern ultrabook, but the graphics performance is going to be pretty dismal. I wouldn't expect great battery life either, since this is the generation before Intel really started to get serious about low power CPUs.

I think if I were in the market I'd probably plan to get something general purpose to last three years through her freshmen year, then refresh when she's got an idea what she'll need for her major.

There is a T440 which is pretty nice. But I recommand X1 Carbon. Lighter than Mac Book Air 13 and has 14 inch screen.

Why there is a price jump for T440s compared to T430s?
