How to find windows 8 key Lenovo Thinkpad X230

genghiskhan 2,901 125 March 26, 2016 at 03:36 PM
My niece has a Lenovo Thinkpad X230 the hard drive died out (tested it as an external and verified it is dead). i popped in a new drive, downloaded the official Microsoft USB Booting Program and as soon as it starts it asks for the product key.
Problem is there is no sticker at all on the laptop. A few google searched tell me that the key is embedded in the BIOS, but I cannot seem to find it.
Any help finding it will be greatly appreciated.

Often stickers with product keys are hidden under the battery. The version of the product key in the bios is different from the key your being prompted for.

You probably need to use recovery media from Lenovo. If the old drive is truly dead you won't be able to use a software option to recover the key, but with a lenovo recovery image you may not need it. You might need to contact lenovo even if it's out of warranty.

Nope nothing under the battery and she being a kid never made recovery disk. Was hoping to be able to get the key easily. Guess I will be contacting them,

Yes the number in the BIOS has a totally different format.

If you install windows 10 (or even 8 for that matter) it should read the key from the bios and not ask for it...make sure you are installing the same version (home/pro) as the system came with.

There is no oem version available from microsoft. All you need is the microsoft media creation tool. It will install without the key if the key is embedded in the bios.

This is new to me. I haven't tried Win 10 yet.
With Win 7, you will need to get OEM ISO file if your computer has OEM key.

Downloaded it first thing it asked for was the key.

My understanding was you have to have a legal copy of windows currently installed.

How did you get it running windows 7? If you installed a less than legal copy you're just creating more problems. I'd still recommend contacting lenovo.

I installed it to run the program posted so I can get the proper key, if that does not work I will try to get Lenovo to help me.

Belarc will just read the key for the currently installed OS. If you installed a pirated copy, it's likely all you did is recover the pirated key.
