REQ: USB "universal" hard drive adapter

jopho 103 22 March 27, 2016 at 06:22 PM
I am looking for a recommendation for a USB to SATA/PATA/IDE/2.5"/3.5" hard drive adapter.
I have a Coolmax adapter that I liked a lot but I lent it to someone and they broke it (how the heck do you break on of these???)
The Coolgear USBG-PSATA look nice and I have no problem buying another Coolmax. There are hundreds of cheap adapters but I would like one that is robust and very reliable.
Thanks

For the most part the cheap ones are fine. Build quality varies but the adapters are all based on just a few different chips. Find one that in the form factor you want. I have several USB3 ones from urlhasbeenblocked and they work fine. My only recommendation would be is to get one thats USB 3 compatible.

There's a limit to how robust these are, but generally better retailers like newegg sell higher quality products than the likes of dx and meritline. Also generally the really crappy ones don't find their way into local retailers.

Just caught the OP wants something that does IDE too. That makes it tougher. Most of these are SATA.

yes, I want something like this. The coolmax is ~$30. Do you think the Startech is that much better?
Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi, could you give just the name of the site so SD does not block it?
Thanks!
