FREEBIE IS NOW EXPIRED. RALEY'S HOOKED UP THE COINSTAR MACHINE TO A PHONE LINE ON JULY 14, 2008

I just got back from Raley's on the corner of Walnut Ave and Fair Oaks Blvd. (map [google.com])
I originally wanted to get an Amazon.com eCertificate to avoid the service fee, but it turns out because they're remodeling the store, the Coinstar machine's modem isn't hooked up. Consequently, the machine printed out a cash voucher for the full value of the coins the machine counted.

Be sure to select any eCertificate at the beginning of the counting process
When the machine is done counting, confirm that you want an eCertificate
The machine will attempt to dial out to issue an eCertificate, but won't connect. This may take up to a minute.
The machine will say it was not able to issue an eCertificate and due to the inconvenience the machine will issue you a cash voucher redeemable for the full value of the coins the machines counted.

They've been remodeling the store for the past 6 weeks now, who knows how much longer the machine won't be hooked up. I'll pop in at least once a week and update the thread if the machine get's connected.

Hm, I wonder if this would work if you pull the modem plug from the back of the machine, then trying to redeem the receipt tax-free.

On second thought, tax evasion is illegal!

So if I choose not to get cash back, are the gift certs / rewards fee-less? Regardless of which coinstar machine of course.

Thanks.

Yes, if you were umm... the unscrupulous type, and the phone jack was easily accessible, you could just unplug it for your transaction. I was familiar with this as the technique has been posted before. But, I actually wanted the Amazon eCertificate to make a large purchase on Amazon. I noticed that the machine was taking a lot longer than usual to connect to the Coinstar servers, I looked behind the machine and there was the phone cord just lying there on the ground with no phone jack in sight. I assume they'll relocate the machine closer to a jack once the store is done with the remodel. For now, I'm just as happy with the cash.

If you do choose to get an eCertificate, they are fee free (ie. you do not have to pay the 8.9% service fee) regardless of which Coinstar machine you use.

Yes, this works, and has been a known issue for quite some time. A quick goggle search shows a digg post from 1 year 151 days ago detailing how to get around the coinstar fee (pull the phone plug).
