TiVo Bolt uses a CableCard from your provider so it can descramble the channels.
yeah to the thread crappers: I was and am a PC/HTPC advocate. I built cool sytems from scratch over the years.

I got a Tivo Bolt from one of the deals a while back. It...it just works. As I get busier in life, there's a lot to be said for a system that just works.

I went to Comcast, got a CableCard, and installed it, easy as pie. Got a moderate level subscription, but Im still saving on box rental fees.

The Bolt ties streaming services into this one little package as well. Really, really cool.

I didnt think Id care that much about 4k. After all, my video card wad pushing that from the HTPC, right? Maybe. But whatever setup the Bolt has does it better.

"No content for 4k?" Man, look at the original stuff Netflix id cranking out. Gorgeous. If you dont think that looks better, get your vision checked. It is the equivalent of when I went to CES years ago and saw what HDTV was *supposed* to look like from the get go. well, we're finally there now.

The Bolt is not for everyone. But Im a fan!!!

I'd be on this if I weren't waiting on Google Fiber. So sick of paying close to $30/month for a 15 year old DVR from Time Warner.

Tivo appears to be in talks to be acquired. Just a heads up. I have a lifetime subscription and only a few years in, so I'm a little worried

The new company would not just do away with TiVo services. They may not improve, but they wouldn't make your box quit working.

If you have to ask, then you don't know what you have been missing.

I wish Tivo (or anyone) would make a Dish compatible box. I'd be all over that. Had a series 2 and it was great for the time.

I switched from Xfinity DVR to Tivo recently. It's been pretty amazing. I can start a show on my upstairs Tivo and finish it downstairs. I can stream shows to my phone. And I still get Xfinity On Demand with it. Really glad I switched.

We are using a laptop as DVR. Shared the recorded video files on the home network. It's a blessing to have techie at home. Smilie

The only possible negative scenario is no new products or improvements on existing products ...but the new company just shutting off TiVo could cause legal issues for them.

I am also 3 years into my Lifetime sub with TiVo & so my payback period has expired & I am now net cash flow positive for the last 12 months.

At $50/per month for an equivalent Xfinity DVR + 3 other rooms DVR setup, I am banking $600 per year going forward.
