Actually, you can easily walk into a Comcast store with the modem in hand to have them dissociate it from a previous owner's account and register it on yours. You'll also need an official govt picture ID.

I had to do this a couple of days ago with a used modem I bought from Craigslist.

just be aware that if these were used on comcast you may be heading for a fight to get it working on your account...

Would recommend the SB6141. I had the 6121 and was getting 95 mbps when my internet was rated for 100....didn't think the 41 would make a difference so I didn't pick it up until I found it for a very good deal. I now am at 118 mbps with the 6141....guess it's that Cox 'turbo' boost...anyway, if your internet speed is anywhere in the neighborhood of 100 and you're not sure if it's worth upgrading, in my experience at least it has been.....

For Comcast, is there a way to check whether the 6141 is clear to use (without actually activating w Comcast)? I want to buy this as a spare unit just in case. Thanks.

Not that I know of. I bought a return a while ago and could not get it activated as they said it was register to another person's account..apparently a common problem..

And they didn't remove it from that person's account?

Probably not. I recently replaced my modem and they didn't remove the old one. Now I have 2 modems activated on my account.
