Thread Details

DW is a HS teacher in foreign language (spanish). She took a trip last summer, which was sponsored and coordinate by her employer (school district), to Spain with other teachers to attend workshops on language and culture. The workshop itself was free (including R&B) but the flight was not (like $1400).

Instructions on the IRS site aren't really helpful, but info on TT leads me to believe this might be deductible.

Thoughts?

I think it's deductable (as a college professor, I would deduct my expenses to go to professional conferences. However, I'm neither a lawyer nor an accountant. Have you looked at this [irs.gov]?.

I would think it is deductible, but best to consult with a tax pro. I also believe they fall under the 2% misc exp rule, so it may not be worth much if all she has is $1400 depending on her income as only the amount over 2% would be deductible.
