Help picking out a Projector in the $500 - $700 range LCD or DLP? What brands have people had good luck with?

Hi Guys,

I am old in the projector game. I bought a used Infocus LP 850 off ebay like 10 years ago and I still use it. It just plugs away. A buddy of mine is looking to upgrade his Acer DLP projector, about 5 years old with a bad DLP chip we think (it looks like "stars" all over the screen - like white burnt our pixels).

Anyhow I'm old in the projector game, but he is looking to me for advice and I do like projectors.... - from what I'm seeing DLP is better for "fast motion" the hertz stuff on TVs that LCD, but LCD seemed better in most other areas. I read this cNET roundup comparing LCD vs. DLP . LCOS [cnet.com] and I've concluded LCOS is out of his budget.

His screen is about 110" or so in a 14 x 20 room. Only a couple of windows with good blinds - so light isn't an issue. Any specific brand recommendations and models? He probably isn't waiting until September for the back to school price drop and would like to be closer to $500 than being closer to $700 (WHO WOULDN'T). LOL thanks
