Unusual audio ad running in Windows 10 while browsing. Make it STOP!

emelvee 40,163 2,053 April 7, 2016 at 04:52 PM
Periodically (quite frequently), on my wife's Win10 laptop, an audio ad will start playing randomly. It's typically for the drug Nexium, but I think other ads have played. She uses IE, er, Edge. She typically has a couple of tabs open, on Yahoo! and Facebook. When the ad plays, there is a speaker icon on the Yahoo! tab. Closing that tab is the only way I've found to stop the ad from playing. After she opens a new tab, the ad will eventually start playing again if she goes to Yahoo! (I think it only occurs when she's on Yahoo!).

I've run Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything.

Any ideas?

it might be a "feature" of the page. You could try an ad blocker or HOSTS file mod or oven Ghostery (browser add-in). Unfortunately these routes also have the habit of breaking some page functionality. Or just stop visiting yahoo.

I was wondering if it was a "feature". I use ad blockers on my own computers, so maybe that's why I haven't experienced it. We've had Yahoo! emails since the 90s, so that's probably not going to change. laugh out loud

It's probably Yahoo. Their ads are crap. You can pay to upgrade to ad-free on Yahoo (likely soon to be Verizon) Mail, use a browser like Chrome/Firefox that supports ad blocker plugins, or ditch Yahoo mail for a different provider that doesn't allow obnoxious ads.

I use Yahoo also (don't hate! over 20 years now laugh out loud), and don't get the audio ads on my home Win10 machine, though I use Chrome rather than Edge. I'll try to convince her to switch to Chrome or Firefox.

If you read the news about yahoo's financial's, it might be time to start sharing another email address with people and creating a backup of your emails.

If there's any doubt about what program is causing it, you can open up the volume mixer and see which program is making noise. If you can switch flash content to not load automatically that might be enough to block it (something that will change on it's own this summer http://arstechnica.com/informatio...k-to-play/). I don't use Edge, so I'm not sure how easily you can do this currently.

Most websites will detect ad blocker and block you out.
It will ask you to disable the ad blocker.

You can often block the adblock blockers. If there's a website that's still throws a fit, evaluate if they have a subscription model that's worthwhile or just read an alternative site with similar content. In a pinch you can often load the cached copy from a google or bing search.

I'm referring to a cached copy that's hosted by google / bing, it doesn't always exist deleted sd threads aren't likely to be cached. If you want to browse through pages in your local web browser cache, there are programs that can do it.

On both Google & Bing, you click the downward triangle at the end of the url in the results list and then cached. This can bypass paywalls sometimes since the need to allow search engines to index.

While this is becoming more common it's still not "most websites' I run Ublock Origin and think of it more as a security firewall to a degree. So many infections are happening by driveby attacks with rogue adverts from ad networks that get infected.

To the OP, I would recommend a different browser that supports plugins (Chrome or Firefox) and then install Ublock Origin. Also making Flash Content click to run is helpful and more secure too. http://www.howtogeek.com/188059/h...b-browser/

It's not a coincidence that the two lines of conversation in this thread are about ad blocking and Yahoo going out of business Smilie

That said, Yahoo mail is too big to fail. Someone will buy it, or someone will buy Yahoo and would have to be crazy to discontinue Yahoo mail. They apparently want $50/yr to go ad free, which is way too much given the cost of the competition.
