Long story short, my parents will be coming over to FL for the first time to visit me. I covered their air fares and since I have a coupe, I told them I'd cover their car rental. The thing is, I think about it and I know some people are going to shun me for saying this, but you never know what's going to happen. I think it is better if my dad paid under his credit card and I covered the payments, this takes me off any liability issues.

What's the best way of going about in doing this if I already said I would cover cost of car rental without sounding like the complete douchebag that I am?

Tell him exactly this and then give him cash for the amount he is charged. Problem solved.

"This whole.. I have XX company so my pee pee is 2" longer talk is hilarious. Who cares what company is cheapest, best, etc. Pick the company and plan you want and keep it to yourself."

Someone will have to provide insurance if you do a reservation online whoever picks up the car will provide insurance. If anything happens they will go after insurance first

If you book a car through costco travel you can add a free additional driver. If you did you were the primary driver and he's the additional, then use your cc to pay, both drivers would be covered.

But I do agree with you and previous posters that the easiest and most convenient is just have your dad book it and pay for it and you reimburse him.

Yep, dad did it. Except scammy alamo sales people at the counter duped him into adding fuel service option. Ugh.
