TS-x31 was released in October 2014

Can't speak for Netgear or Synology but I have been using QNAP for few years and have been very pleased with it.

Been there, done that. It is great if you have the knowledge to do it. It can get complex depending on what you're tryin to do. Also, a lot of wasted power. One of those machines eats about 150w. Most NASs will use about 30-40w and can slow down the disks to use even less than 10w. In my book, that's a huge bonus.

You can probably accomplish what your saying with a hard disk connected to a router. However, that won't be RAIDed which means if that drive fails, you're SOL. If the data your backing up is critical, I would recommend a NAS and use a mirrored RAID 1 drives. That gives you a bit of a cushin if one of the drives fail.

Personally, I have 2 QNAPs (not this one). One at my house and another one at my parents a couple of hours away. I set up the one at my house to replicate every few hours to the other one. Each NAS also has an external USB drive connected to it. They backup up locally to the external drives once a day. The system is very feature rich and makes the administration piece a breeze. QNAP support is professional and available. Their firmware updates are frequent and consistent. Haven't had any major issues at all. The NAS will also serve as a Media server/Itune Server/Web Server/ Download Station/ etc etc etc.

How is $178 the same as $139? It hasn't been $139.99 at Amazon in nearly a year according to CCC.

You seem to say the same thing in every thread that's not Amazon.

How does this compare to the Synology DS216j ? I'm new to NAS and trying to decide between QNAP and Synology.

I think TS-231 was released one year ago. You might got different model.

Sorry, got it around late Fall 2014. You might have to search the forum for the past lowest price.
