How to turn off storage HDD before reformatting OS SSD

RUsum1 9,544 1,696 April 14, 2016 at 05:16 PM
I would like to do a clean install of Windows on my laptop. It has an mSATA (OS drive) and a HDD that has some stuff on it. Is there a way to "turn off" the HDD before doing the clean install? The reason I want to do this is because in the past if I install Windows onto an SSD, for some reason it likes to install a small 100MB portion (maybe recovery or something) onto a secondary drive if one is plugged in. If there is only one hard drive that doesn't happen. So I want to trick my computer into thinking that there is only one drive available without having to take it apart and physically unplugging the secondary drive

You may be able to disable the sata port on the BIOS.

You might be able to physically remove the hard drive without too much effort depending on the design of the specific laptop. If you can't easily disable it in the bios. http://www.howtogeek.com/175649/w...-the-bios/ But there's always a chance for some issues if the boot order isn't set right.

That recovery partition is likely on the SSD itself and it just formats the single SSD into 2 partitions. I've never ever heard of windows resizing a non-install drive to insert a 100MB partition.

I agree, if the OP is correct this is the 1st time I've ever heard of it. Linux install a second partition by default but not windows.

unmark as active, delete the 100mb.

back up first 1mb sectors with HEX editor, fill with zero, make it raw. windows won't touch it, because raw can be encrypted. write the 1mb back after
