Edit: Prices change depending on stock and zip code, as does the availability of shipping. Try your local stores for prices that range from $11 to $20 by using the "check other stores" link under the store pickup option on the right side of the page and putting in your own or nearby zip codes.

The same kit is $30 at CPO and Amazon, $40 at Walmart, and $38 at Sears.

Ramblin man found the 14 piece kit, PC1014, for as low as $27.48: http://www.lowes.com/pd_306070-70-PC1014_0__

Edit: This set is $10.99 at the Olathe, KS 66062 location with shipping possibly available for $5.99. (Thanks Natedgreat)

Edit: Parcel shipping option is YMMV and may no longer be available for the above location. I've seen a few others at $10.99 as well but without the shipping option. For shipping this is the lowest price I am currently aware of: $12.99 at the Central Long Beach, CA 90815 location with shipping available for $5.99.

$18.98
was $19.98

The Amazon and Walmart ones are resellers and should not be used to base prices or worth on. Didnt check Sears but assuming the same.

Those are just some of the cheaper alternatives for buying this set, though some are just CPO through different outlets. Grainger has it for $61, which I assume is close to the actual MSRP. Keep in mind that the "was" price shown at Lowes often reflects intermediate discounts and is not necessarily what the initial shelf price was.

For $11 in-store or even $17 shipped, this is much cheaper than anywhere else that I could find. Please share if you find it at a better price.

Fortunately, they are out of stock near me. Otherwise, it's another thing that I buy, but never use. I've only ever used them to drill holes for European hinges. What else can they be used for?

Forstner bits main advantages over other bits are that they drill flat bottom holes with clean sides and have minimal tear out for through holes. In addition to holes for mounting hardware, they can be used used for mortices or through holes where appearance matters.

I built a tv/media stand and used a forstner bit for the holes to run cables through.

Didn't see anyone mention that the PORTER-CABLE 14-Pack Forstner Bit Set [lowes.com] is also on clearance. Lowest price I saw was $27.48. (orig. $49.99). Maybe add it to OP?
Item #: 306070 | Model #: PC1014
This is the one I want because I need the larger bits. Been watching these for months.
I was waiting for next price drop, but people bought them all up at $35 price. Mad

** UPDATE: Did a little more research and learned that the older 14pc set that comes in a wooden case has sizes up to 2-1/8", while the newer set that comes in a plastic case has the 2-1/8" bit removed and they added a 2nd 1/4" bit. WOW!! Using same model # also. That's one dirty trick that Porter Cable pulled.

Some uses include:
Recessed Deck LED lighting
Clock inserts
Holes to receive baluster spindles
whenever you need a cleaner cut hole than a spade bit for example, and flat bottom as you know. If you are drilling a through hole, use a scrap backer board, because the hole can really blow out.
