Failure occurs in lever type ratcheting jack stands either do to user error by loading it without the cam fully engaged or because of a flaw in the casting which prevents the cam from fully locking. If you are smart and careful, one lock should be sufficient, two provides an extra margin of safety.
For anyone considering these because they have a larger margin of safety than the smaller ones, also consider that they have a bigger footprint and higher minimum height so you may not be able to get them under a smaller vehicle with a smaller jack.

Depending on your application, you might also want to consider the double locking (cam lever plus safety pin) 3-ton ones from Northern Tool for $25. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/..._200641757

double locking? os it really necessary? what are chances of single lock failure?

hey thanks, been reading about it and it seems like the really paranoid will use extra jack stands, the jack and put the wheels under it too.

good deal... got 2 pair from previous deal for around $30/pair. Did the tie rod on my SUV, felt plenty safe.

Just bought a new Jeep and was waiting on these, perfect timing! Now I need to find a nice new jack and I'll be set. Tempted to buy another pair so I have four.

Honestly, unless you planning to do tire rotation or something that require you to have the whole truck off the ground, there's really no point of having 4 stands. I have 4, but 2 of them are sitting brand new in box. laugh out loud

In the pictures, the feet look flat vs. a "V" pattern which sink into asphalt. I bought a big red set with a flat bottom and locking pin. the flat bottom preserves my asphalt driveway.
