I got the 8TB last time it was on sale at this price. I would have loved getting it for $180, but I needed to backup my data for a NAS upgrade, so I made the call. Either way, this isn't a bad deal, and a helluva lot of storage.

SD need to write a script that warns posters that HGST 4TB 7200rpm are not considered a sale at $140 shipped as they've been bumping against that low price for years.

I'd like to use this to play my files. I dont wish to raid it. Is there a software that will log my changes so that I can manually make changes on another drive?
Or is there something that will automatically restructure a secondary drive, with changes made, but only to the files that ive already backed up?

GoodSync will probably do that

Agreed. 140 each seems to be "normal" sales pricing. Really need these to start getting cheaper. I'd be all over if them if the sales hit the $115-125 range

Don't need huge drives but need two 1TBs like, today. Could anyone guide me? I'd prefer to actually go buy them in-store as it's kind of an emergency - DH's drive is maxed and he needs to work... I gotta offload stuff asap. (It sucks being the IT department for the family.)

I have locally BB, Staples and WM; that's pretty much it.

And thousands of people are now scratching their heads and thinking "Where am I going to find enough pron to fill up one of these?".

Seriously, though, I can't believe how much space there is on consumer drives these days and how cheap they are per GB. With 4TB and even 5TB drives hitting the $100 mark, this isn't the best deal out there, and putting so much data on one drive is clearly more risky. But damn, that's a lot of space.

At some point I'll get one of these and consolidate various media files (not pron!) I have sitting on several 1-2TB drives, and back everything that isn't already backed up to BR, as I won't need online backups. By then, 10TB and even larger drives will likely come out.

Unless you need internal drives you might want to get a couple of portable 1TB drives for around $50 each. If you need internals, any 1TB drive will do. Go with the longest warranty.
