I recently bought2 X RainMachine Mini-8 from New Egg and installed them yesterday. Easy to install, configure and operate via iOS devices. The web interface via IE or Chrome or Edge is still in beta stage and hence a bit buggy.

I am very impressed and I think $129 + tax was well spent.

Highly recommended.

The $129 at Newegg is good until 04/23. Amazon has the same product for $159.99.

Ordered mini-8 around Nov last year for same price on amazon. Qualified to get $120 rebate which I received.
Even without rebate it's worth twice as much (Any smart sprinkler system for that matter) as it allowed me save almost 25% on water bill so far. I love flexibility of turning on sprinklers from whenever and from wherever I'm. App and firmware updates are done on regular bases which is good too.

Love my Rainmachine Mini-8. Super easy to install and definitely paid for itself in water last summer. I like that it has a simple on device interface in case someone (like your sprinkler guy) doesn't want to or can't deal with an app. If your controller is tucked away somewhere you don't see often, no need to spring for the one with the nice display (the HD-12) - the Mini-8 has the same functionality (for 8 zones of course).

Compared to other smart sprinkler controllers, it's nice that it's not dependent on the cloud. The app interfaces directly to the device without relying on a cloud server (as long as your on your home network). It can run without internet access at all if needed actually (using historical data).

The feature I like the most - runs independently from vendor.

tldr- a different product I bought (but canceled in time) depends on the vendor's cloud implementation. So if they lose interest in the product, or go out of business, the unit stops operating.

The RainMachine runs without vendor resources, so it will continue to run.

I got it last week when it was $229. So, I don't feel too bad... but I hesitated last year when it was $199... oh well.

I haven't install it yet. I have a rain sensor connected to my current sprinkler. Rainmachine doesn't have a dedicated connector for the sensor. From what I read, there's a way to connect the rain sensor, or just don't bother with the rain sensor. Anybody else using a rain sensor?

I bought the Rachio 1st-Gen 8-zone for the same price about a week ago, still unopened. I think I might return it to Amazon and get the Rainmachine Mini 8 instead.

8 zones is enough for me but does the HD-12 offer any additional functionality over and above the Mini-8 besides more zones and a better display/interface on the box itself?

That's the only upgrade of the HD-12 over the Mini-8. I only have 6 zones, so I got the Mini. Saved me $90.
