Unlocking - Do NOT open the retail packaging before unlocking
  1. Request Unlock Code
    • Go here [att.com] > Accept terms > Click Continue
    • Select Non-AT&T Mobility customer > enter info
      • IMEI # is printed on the bottom of the retail box
      • Use a real email address
      • Name can be fake
  2. Verify unlock request - AT&T will send a confirmation email. Click the confirmation link
  3. Enter Unlock Code - Wait for ATT to email the unlock code then choose 1 of the following methods
    • With non AT&T SIM - if you have a SIM from any other carrier, active or inactive
      • Insert the NON AT&T SIM and turn the phone on
      • Wait for the unlock prompt and enter the unlock code. If the unlock prompt doesn't automatically appear then select the language preference and press Next
    • WithOUT NON AT&T SIM - if you DON'T have a SIM from any other carrier
      • Remove the AT&T SIM and turn the phone on
      • Complete initial setup and navigate to phone dialer and enter ##7820#. Emergency dialer woN'T work
      • Enter unlock code
Unlock Info
  • SIM unlock is permanent, even after a hard reset
  • If AT&T emails you saying Your request for device unlock requires additional research to determine eligibility, just ignore it, you don't have to do anything. AT&T will email the code later
  • If ATT emails you saying your unlock request is denied. Just ignore the email and resubmit the request. You can resubmit with the exact same email. No one knows why this happens
  • If ATT emails you the unlocking instructions without the unlock code then you have to resubmit the request. You can resubmit with the exact same email. No one knows why this happens

Even though it's been this price repeatedly, I still gotta show the 640 some love with a TU. I got one for $11.99 from Walgreen's, but it's every bit worth $30. Windows Phone is rather gimped in app selection just as it was with my HD7 5 years ago, but I still love it as a backup.

This is a great phone at whatever budget price: sharp camera images (better detail than my iPhone 5), excellent video, outstanding screen, excellent battery life, excellent call quality, very good signal grabber, and although not as many apps for the app hungry crowd, it has what I use: Instagram, FB, What'sApp, Google Voice (hangouts), access to Google maps, and Skype. Easy to unlock via At&t or eBay and gets LTE. Anyone complains on this phone is a serious whiner.

Just switched back to Android after test driving the 640 for about two weeks. The phone itself is really nice and I could live with Windows if I had to but I do prefer Android. The two big things missing for me were true ONE TOUCH dialing from the home screen and the Bluetooth Connect and Play app. The 640 is definitely the perfect phone for someone transitioning to their first smartphone because it's as simple to use as an Iphone.

If ya live in Meijer country, they have the 640 for 25 bucks right now.

I've seen this comment before - what precisely do you mean by one-touch dialing in Android? (I left Android at KitKat, so I don't know what's changed) In one touch, you get to the dialer in Win10 Mobile - what item are you "one-touching" to dial on a droid?

Both Android and Windows allow you to put individual contact icons on the home screen. With Android the contact is immediately dialed when you tap their icon. Tapping a contact icon with Windows just opens up that contact and requires an additional tap to dial the number. So Windows actually uses what I call Two Touch dialing from the home screen. I know it's just one extra step but I found it really irritating while spending the two weeks with the 640.

Android also has One touch texting from the home screen. I keep a custom folder on my home screen with everyone I frequently text.

i bought this when price first dropped. its pretty decent, no doubt. i tried the HERE maps and Drive and that is pretty cool. other than that, its sits in a drawer. just prefer android, i guess. i expect to get flamed, but i prefer my moto e to this.
i've tried to give it to my parents and a few coworkers, but nobody wants it, because of windows. i'll keep it for the offline gps and occasional mp3 player. maybe hook it up to a speaker in my daughters room and use it for a pandora streamer...
