I'm new to DE razors. this is my favorite handle of three so far including a merkur heavy. Great starter set for those wanted to try out de shaving. not a fan of their de blades but I'm sure they work for some people. I use feather blades in this and am getting really close shaves.

Their razors might be nice but their blades aren't worth the trouble. I've tried them a few times and hated them passionately. The Astra superior Platinum are good (and cheap) and of course the Feather blades are fantastic. Also, Gillette Silver Blue are good. Shark blades are terrible. Kai is so so.

I've been wet shaving for a couple years and that's my experience. Still, this is a good price for a DE razor. I'll probably pick one up on your recommendation. I need another since my wife has been stealing, dropping and breaking mine...

Thanks, in for one. Another DE razor to add to my collection.

I find that the Astra SP are smoother than the Shark Super Chromes. On my face/skin, the Chromes seem keener and have a 'bite' if I am not extra careful with them. I prefer to use them in milder razors, but the Astra SPs work great for me in any razor.

may I have your opinion on the Derby Extra blades?

A butterfly blade for a great price. Amazon [amazon.com] has this going for 20 bucks and has decent reviews. Thanks

I don't care for them. I'm pretty sure I tried all the shark blades and hated them.

Edit: just checked my drawer. Yeah, I hated those. They came with my maggard starter kit along with the Astra blades. I still have the box of sharks from years ago. I have really straight, corse hair so a sharp blade means the world to me.

I haven't tried them, I don't think. I've tried the Lord brand blade and wasn't impressed. I have it in my head that they're related to the Derbys but I don't know why.

Another that I seem to remember being passable were the Gillette super thins. Kind of like the Kai bladed. They're decent, but not my first pick. I shave with the Astra superior platinum most days. The green ones, not the blues. The blues aren't that great.

It also seems to depend on which particular batch of blades you get. I've had some durablade sharp blades in the all green package that were AMAZING. Better than the feathers, even. So I thought that was going to be my new blade of choice. I bought a few more boxes and just couldn't use them they were so awful. Oh, and the cheapo plastic feather razor is not worth buying.

Anyhow, I did pick up this deal. It really is a good price for just the razor itself if it's decent.

Did you use Super Stainless? Super Chrome are smooth like butter. I bought a pack of stainless and noticed that they're more likely to bite. I can't imagine someone liking feather blades and not liking Shark Super Chrome, they're a pretty similar feel.

The best advice for a newbie is to go find a variety pack. You'll quickly find which blades suit your style and which blades cut like hell.

Just a pro tip but with blades your better off trying a sample pack of blades to see what works right for you. Everyones face and hair is different and what works for someone might not work for you. I tried a sample pack when i first gor into it and astras worked great and the sharks/derbys were the worst for my face.

Agreed, best advice you could ever give to someone starting out.

I have this set as my travel set as it comes with a cheap but handy case. It is a nice enough razor, and would make a great starting point into DE wet shaving. The blades are not the greatest, but are certainly not bad, especially to start on as they are somewhat forgiving. Just change them out after every couple of shaves and they will still last you a good while. I paid more and have no regrets, great find for the price OP. I'm almost tempted to order one as a backup set.

How good are these kind of shavers, if I have to get a close shave and do it almost daily? I started to doing it recently and I get really irritated and my facial hair seems to be coarse and curly and get a lot of ingrown hairs. I'll think I'll give it a try for this price but any tip would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm looking for a deal on a styptic pencil... lol. It took me about a month to learn that de shaving requires more patience.

And which blades to use? That's like politics, religion, sex, and cilantro. You find your own flavor, and trust nothing anybody else says. It's a personal thing.

Does anyone shave their head with DE? I'm interested in trying with the amount of blades I go through. I usually shave mine every day or every other day.
