I've had this for like 5 years, still runs good, surprised they are still making it.

I got this last time around, and just to warn everyone, they are super picky about what you send. For the receipt, you have to send something labeled "invoice" or "packing slip"; I sent my processing info (which more or less looks exactly like a receipt) and they denied my rebate.
Thankfully they give people a second chance to send additional materials, so I printed my "invoice" and it looks like it might go through.

Good drive though, seems to handle most things just fine. Great for laptops with no DVD drive for occasional use.

that's not picky... that's just following the instructions properly. this is why people have issues with rebates, just send the thing they say to send and you'll never have a problem. i've done 100s of rebates, never once had one denied.

bought this the last time too, great little external drive. i actually ended up getting 2, 1 for free from NE since USPS lost my original order for a time, they also gave me a 10$GC for the rebate amount for the trouble, and the replacement came in time for the rebate as well Smilie ended up with 2 drives, totally free.

I usually don't have issues with rebates, but it didn't cross my mind that they would actually split hairs with it. They essentially have the same information (order number, date of purchase, shipping address, total paid, etc), but perhaps an invoice is a little more finalized.
If it weren't for the different headers on the documents (processing info vs receipt) I'd be surprised if most people could separate the two.
Either way I figure it'd be a good warning to people, but then again I'm not a SD veteran so maybe I'm just grouchy and inexperienced haha.

Have you ever had to / been able to boot to a disc using this? If so, please share.

I have a similar product by LG and the BIOS wouldn't detect it (Gigabyte UEFI, new model w/current BIOS), so I had to hook up an internal DVD drive to install Windows, then remove the drive when I was finished.

It would be nice to have an external USB DVD drive that I could also boot off of. Perhaps this is a limitation on the MB BIOS side, but I would think that if most machines can boot of off a USB flash drive, then they should be able to boot off a USB DVD drive with a bootable disc inside (such as Windows, Ubuntu, etc).

On one hand, they try to be picky to reduce the rebate money expense, on the other, it is someone's job on the line to follow the rule. Can't blame them for that especially if the rule was not followed.

" MAC OS & WIN8 Compactible". Do you suppose it will run on Windows 10 w/o any issues?

I'd buy it for $20 if there was no rebate. sadly if I buy it, the company might think the rebate helped. rebates are really bad. I have lost so much money in rebates. if everyone refused to buy things with rebates then companies would stop offering them and switch to coupons. please everyone buy a drive with out a rebate.
