Automatic URL-Populated Image Attachments No Longer Work for Newegg & Various Other Sites

TDMVP73 24,294 101,930 April 22, 2016 at 06:40 PM More Newegg Deals
ATTN Web Devs,

About a month and a half ago, the Automatic Images that show up to attach to a deal based on the URL's in the body of the OP stopped functioning correctly.

The images do show up at the bottom, but if I check one of the boxes for an image to have the site attach it, the image will not attach. The check mark stays selected for approximately a second or two, and then disappears. Nothing will be attached.

This has been widely prevalent on all Newegg deals I post. I am not sure if it was related to a site update or not.

FWIW, I use Firefox 45.0.2. I have also tested this in Chrome 50.0.2661.87.

For Newegg, images can come in a variety of formats. Almost all Image URLs use the Short Item #.

For example, let's look at this page [newegg.com].

Newegg Long Item # (on Product Page): N82E16828879068
Newegg Short Item # (SKU): 28-879-068

Format #1
Code:
http://images10.newegg.com/productimage/28-879-068-03.jpg
Output: 640px x 480px

The number after the SKU, in this case -03, is the Image #. You could have 01, 02, and so on.

Here is another example [newegg.com] to look at.

Format #2:
Code:
http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/newegg/20-211-984-Z01?$S1280$
Output:
S1280 = 1,280px x 960px (Best Quality)
S640 = 640px x 480px
S320 = 320px x 240px

Z01 = First Image
Z02 = Second Image, etc.

Most products have anywhere from 5 to 10 images, with the last one usually being the product packaging. Some items like monitors may have more.

There are some Newegg-sold items which don't follow this format:
Example [newegg.com]

The large image for that would be HERE [newegg.com]

Marketplace items by third-party sellers also do not follow the conventional image format:
Example [newegg.com]

The large image for that would be HERE [newegg.com]

Hopefully that helps in restoring this functionality. If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask here or via PM.

Any update on this?

It is still not working with Newegg Images.

Yes, the site will occasionally pull an image from Amazon if it can find it, but I'd rather have high quality images pulled from the source.

Thanks for bumping this, I hadn't seen it the first time around Smilie

I'll see if I can find some time to take a look at this; as the original author of that feature I'd like to see why it isn't working Smilie

ftr, this is not just happening upon thread creation. In QA we've noticed same when trying to add images via edit screen. URLs for images that used to work such as those on Newegg when using the url to upload the image, we now have to download the image first, then upload it from our PCs.

Yah, it's the same code, so it would be broken everywhere Smilie

Unfortunately I haven't had time to look at this just yet, but it's still on my list.

Hi TDMVP,

Newegg should be working fine now - I tested it on a few URLs including the one you linked in the OP.

Let me know if there are any issues.

I'm still having issues with certain items. For example, on this thread, I tried attaching the pictures of the 8-Port TP-Link Switch and TRENDnet Router prior to posting and it momentarily selected, but did not upload. Ended up just posting and the site auto-grabbed some Amazon images. I'll go back and fix it later.

Then, when I tried uploading the LG Burner on this thread: HERE, it did work properly. Confused

If it doesn't click over to the highlighted background color and stay checked, something went wrong and it can't attach that image.

The remote servers sometimes return bad data and it can't be processed properly. We're looking to add some other improvements to the uploader, but those enhancements require more significant work.
